Rod Review

Surprising from the Outset, Molix's MOR-C-76SB Swimbait Stick (continued)

Power: The payoff comes when that lure stops with an actual tug at the end of the line. Swing the MOR-C-76SB for a hookset, and the stick responds with a nice, smooth, powerful backbone that continues to perform as you battle that voracious fish back to the boat. I say voracious because any fish that hits baits of these sizes is just, well voracious!

Molix Outset MOR-C-76SB Casting Rod against the historical averages of similarly powered rods we've tested over the past twenty plus years

That reg-fast (or mod-fast) taper is ideal with glides, swimmers, and wakes - pretty much any hard bodied, treble hooked bait you want to fish. It is less ideal with single hooked soft bodies, but if you're fishing smaller paddletails, the MOR-C-76SB will and handle that assignment too.

Checking out that taper

Design & Ergonomics: Tipping our scales at six ounces (6oz) and with a balance point of nine and a half inches (9.5") up from the mid point of the reel seat, the MOR-C-76SB is not the lightest or most perfectly balanced build, but it isn't the heaviest or most cumbersome swimbait stick out there either. I'd say it's perfectly average in these metrics, but what makes this stick interesting is the way it separates at the handle making it a little easier to pack (and yes, it comes with a rod sleeve to carry both pieces) and the fact the blank is coated with a protective layer of epoxy.

Normally, I'm not a fan of this treatment because in most situations, I feel it robs the blank of sensitivity. However, given this stick's raison d'ĂȘtre, I'm less concerned about sensitivity and more pleased the stick has a degree of protection from nicks and scuffs the big hooks from these baits can impart on the blank over the course of a day on the water or life of the rod whenever the stick is fully rigged. Double footed guides throughout is also a little uncommon on a stick rated to only 4 oz in lure weight. This type of treatment is usually reserved for sticks built for even heavier lures, so it's nice to know the MOR-C-76SB is built with durability in mind.

Another thing I really like about this stick and something a lot of big bait enthusiast might scoff at is its length. I'm not a big fan of eight foot rods and actually prefer sticks no longer than seven foot, nine inches in length, so the MOR-C-76SB, at 7'-6" is right in my preferred wheelhouse. This length is far easier to transport in my boat's smallish rod locker, but also easier to handle and fish all day long. I find longer sticks cumbersome with the way I fish and they tire out my wrist and forearms more quickly.

Good sized rear grip for two handed casting

Price & Applications: Priced at $199 at the time of this writing, I feel the MOR-C-76SB is at the proper cost to acquire. If you enjoy the mojo of fishing brand on brand product, this stick is a very good choice for Molix's line of hard bodied big baits. Really, it's an ideal stick for wakes (including rats), crankdowns, glides, and swimmers under four ounces and would make a killer stick for conventionally sized baits like squarebills, heavier vibrating jigs, topwater cigar baits and more. Don't let the "SB" at the end of the rod's model number scare you off, this is a very capable extra-heavy powered rod.

Conclusion: To be honest, I'm a little surprised at how much I enjoyed fishing Molix's Outset MOR-C-76SB. I didn't find the rod's design particularly inspiring out of the shipping tube, and that gloss finish over the entire blank kind of turned me off. Thing is, the more I fished the stick, the more it grew on me and I began to see and understand the benefit of that glossy finish to the point I was actually thankful for it given how much abuse my sticks can endure just sitting on the boat waiting to be used.

If you're looking for a stick that can handle baits up to 4 oz in weight and a variety of different techniques, consider Molix's Outset MOR-C-76SB, it
might surprise you

Casting performance is really ideal, and that power curve is smooth and reassuring. It's just a good, solid, very well performing stick and one that does not require a second thought once you have it rigged up and in your rotation of combos for the day. Sometimes I have to adjust my casting motion when I pick up a different combo, but with the MOR-C-76SB, despite it's taper, there was no such adjustment. If you're looking for a stick that can handle baits up to 4 oz in weight and a variety of different techniques, consider Molix's Outset MOR-C-76SB, it might surprise you.
