Casting that Screams: The Innovative Trika Ti100 Baitcaster (continued)

Drag: The Ti100 utilizes a carbon drag system, a common feature in modern baitcasters. However, Trika's unique approach surrounds this system with titanium brake plates - a notable difference versus traditional steel washers. These titanium components are designed to handle heat better but also offer greater durability and corrosion resistance.

A look under the hood reveals the aluminum gearing which is Teflon coated for durability and corrosion resistance

In our lab tests, the Ti100's drag system delivered 13.2 lbs. of max drag pressure, surpassing both the 12.7 lbs. measured in the prototype and Trika's own 12-lb. rating. While this isn't the highest stopping power in its class, the drag system excels in providing smooth, consistent performance over extended fights.

The Ti100 features a drag surrounded with titanium washers aka brake plates

I really felt the benefits of the titanium brake plates when battling Delta stripers. These larger fish put the Ti100's drag to the test, especially given that I was fishing with only 12lb. fluorocarbon. Even after extended runs, the drag remained buttery smooth, helping to keep fish pinned while preventing line breakage - a testament to the Ti100's drag system's performance under stress.

Inside the drag system is a combination of carbon fiber and felt washers. This is a very smooth drag

Another feature that I do really like about the Ti100's drag system is the inclusion of an audible drag. During extended runs the drag delivers a reassuring click letting anglers know exactly what is happening on the end of the line.

The Ti100 sits very low on reel seats, and pairs very well with Trika's own rods

Ergonomics: The Ti100 excels in ergonomics, featuring a compact, machined billet aluminum frame that palms beautifully. While the prototype closely resembled the Bates Hundo's silver frame, the mass production model's matte gray finish is a much better aesthetic match for Trika's rod lineup. Beyond looks, this finish also provides a slightly better grip, making it less slippery when wet. Additionally, the final version introduces flatter, wider paddle knobs, offering anglers a more solid and comfortable grip, even in wet conditions.

Ergonomics are a high point for the Ti100, palming feels comfortable and natural

Although the Ti100 is currently only available in a 7.1:1 gear ratio, Trika does offer both right- and left-handed versions. The externally adjustable drag system is easy to fine-tune, with clicking dials and knobs that provide precise adjustments. Weighing in at just 5.5 ounces, the Ti100 is one of the lightest aluminum-frame reels on the market, and is only 0.2 ounces heavier than the Bates Hundo 100.

Smooth performer. The Ti100's knobs are bearing supported

It often takes years and multiple generations to refine ergonomics as well as Trika has in their very first reel. The subtle angling of the frame makes the Ti100 very comfortable to palm, and it's no accident that all key controls - including dials and knobs - are all clearly visible and easily accessible from the top (the way an angler normally holds the reel when operating it).

Both the Ti100 prototype and mass production reels drags proved to be smooth and reliable under pressure

Price and Applications: When the Trika Ti100 was first announced, it launched with an ambitious $299 price point, which would have been an incredible value given its feature set and performance. However, due to the rising costs of materials, manufacturing, and labor, the price was soon adjusted to its current $399 MSRP. This puts it slightly above the Bates Hundo 100 ($375).

I caught a lot of schoolie stripers with the Ti100 and even though the reel doesn't have a very powerful max drag it is a very refined one. I really liked the audible drag feature

While the initial $299 target would have made the Ti100 a game-changing bargain, the $399 price point still offers strong value, considering its CNC-machined frame, titanium spool shaft, ceramic bearings, and refined overall ergonomics. What further sets the Ti100 apart is Trika's unique 365-day money-back guarantee, allowing anglers to test the reel extensively to ensure it meets their expectations. No other reel company offers this kind of risk-free trial, reinforcing Trika's customer-focused approach.

Though small in size the Ti100 really feels at home as a power fishing reel. It is very well suited for pitching as well as working deeper diving reaction baits

Currently, the Ti100 remains the only reel in Trika's lineup. While not perfect, it's an impressive first effort. If the reel were a bit smoother, was offered multiple retrieve ratios, and had a stronger max drag, it would be even harder to beat. What's most intriguing is that Trika has managed to deliver a level of innovation and performance that typically takes several generations for most reel manufacturers to achieve. This is a testament to both Trika's talented design team and their manufacturing facility's investment in precision machining technology.

I really like the darker finish on the mass production reel. It matches better with most rods and feels a little more grippy when palmed

Looking ahead, I'd love to see a larger, more powerful version of the Ti100 built for big swimbaits. I also suspect Trika is developing a spinning reel, and I'm eager to see how they approach that design. Given the Ti100's focus on ceramic bearings, it's unlikely they will use ceramics in a spinning reel. Instead, I'd expect a machined body, a smoother cranking feel, and plenty of power. One thing is certain - whatever reel Trika engineers are working on next, it will likely stand apart from the other options on the market in some way, shape, or form.

I was surprised how dialed in the Ti100 is being the first reel ever offered from Trika

Ratings: (We've re-calibrated our ratings standard for 2008 and have included a key at the bottom of the following matrix as a guide):

Trika Ti100 Baitcaster Ratings (?/10)

Construction/Quality The Ti100 is very well built. The reel features some high quality components including full ceramic bearings, a titanium spool shaft, and a precision CNC machined frame that all feel very high-end 9
Performance The Ti100 has a very unique personality due to the ceramic spool bearings. This implementation helps make the reel a very strong caster, and also a louder one than most competing reels. The drag in this reel is very smooth but lacks some of the max pressure of some competing reels. Though small in size the Ti100 provides a very confident retrieve with the rigid frame and quality gearing 8.8
Price We would have loved the original target price but even at $399 the Trika Ti100 is priced competitively when you consider the innovative features and matching performance 8
Features Loaded with features including the CNC machined aluminum frame, full ceramic bearings, titanium brake plates with a carbon drag, bearings supported knobs, and a externally adjustable magnetic drag system - this reel is loaded 9.5
Design (Ergonomics) The Ti100 is similar to the Bates Hundo in form factor and build externally but there are differences in angles, knobs, and they feel very different the minute you cast them. 9
Application The Ti100 is a solid workhorse reel and seems well suited for power fishing applications. Though small in size it is big on power and the machined frame, ceramic bearings, and titanium shaft also hold up very well to abuse. This is an excellent first reel from Trika and we would love to see more gear ratios, and a larger size down the line 8

Conclusion: The Trika Ti100 marks an impressive debut for the brand in the reel market. This compact baitcaster pairs exceptionally well with Trika's rods, not just in styling, but also in performance and feel. Just as Trika's rods set themselves apart through their blank and handle materials, the Ti100 does the same with its ceramic bearings and titanium shaft. These exotic materials aren't just a novelty - they have a tangible impact on performance, enhancing both casting efficiency and long-term durability.

The Trika Ti100 is a great casting reel and is a very engaging and fun reel to fish with. I personally love the way the reel's ceramic spool bearings screams when cast

And in the Ti100's case, that impact is substantial. The combination of full-ceramic ABEC7 bearings and a titanium shaft delivers exceptional casting performance, while the rigid CNC-machined body ensures rock-solid cranking power. Despite its compact size, the T100 punches well above its weight, offering a level of performance typically reserved for larger, more established reel brands.

One of the most unique aspects of the Ti100 is its audible personality, the distinct high-pitched scream of the ceramic bearings as baits soar through the air. While some anglers may find the bearing noise distracting, others (myself included) appreciate it as a signature trait of this compact baitcaster.

Owners of Trika's rods will love the new Ti100 but the reel is so well designed and executed that it will help open the brand up to anglers simply looking for a great casting compact baitcaster - it is that good.

The Ti100 is more than ready for prime time, and it's an excellent companion for Trika's 3X and 6X rods, both in ergonomics and capability. While early adopters will likely be existing Trika rod owners, this reel is so well-executed that even anglers unfamiliar with the brand should give it a shot. Cast it once, and you might just get hooked - not only by the Ti100's impressive casting distance and powerful cranking feel, but also by its distinctive sound.
