What Are We Going to do About RI's Man Bear Pig?

Introduction:
If there's one bait manufacturer that's not afraid to have a little fun in the naming of their baits, it's Reaction Innovations. If you're not careful about staring too long at that Tramp Stamp while Vixen is Twerking, you're likely to get Donkey Punched with a Machete or at least get a two handed Shiver. One of their most recent introduction's name has its origins in pop culture out of a fictional little town with the initials SP. Here's our look at Reaction Innovations's Man Bear Pig.

Introducing Reaction Innovations's wild creation, the Man Bear Pig

Impressions: Reaction Innovation's Man Bear Pig is realistically more of a Beaver Hog. It has the body of their signature Beaver trailer bait with the backwards facing ridges, thinned out and elongated then combined with the appendages of a Zoom Brush Hog. It measures five inches in length and is made from the same soft plastic formulation as their other baits.

It's actually more of a Beaver Hog

Real World Tests: I fished it on both a wide gap and straight shank worm hook with a pegged tungsten weight but no punch skirt on both spinning and casting gear and mostly with fluorocarbon line.

If this bait has any swimming action at all, it's mostly in this twin spiraling tail

As you might imagine, the Man Bear Pig is simple enough to rig Texas style and that very subtle center channel on the top and bottom of the bait allows you to tex-pose the hook point if you choose to do so (I usually do).

However, the arms on the side of the bait can be detached providing just a touch more action when the bait is on the move

This bait is best fished in some kind of motion either hoped, dragged, or swum along the bottom. It's twin tail appendages will flutter on constant movement or flap up and down following the motion of the bait if you lift and drop your rod tip. The two arms coming out the side of the bait near the imaginary head, are attached at the ends out of the package and easily pinched free if you want a little more action in the bait as you're fishing it.

These kind of skirt flaps don't do much other than create more disturbance when the bait is moving - they don't move themselves

An interesting way I found later, to fish this bait is unweighted. Thanks to that solid, Sweet Beaver like body, the Man Bear Pig actually has a good amount of heft. It tipped our scales at 0.36 oz which is just shy of three eighths of an ounce (3/8 = 0.375). It's super easy to cast and pitch on its own and when it hits the water unweighted, it sinks enticingly slow in a neutral position.

Another look at the twirly tails

My Man Bear Pigs typically lasted through a few fish before needing to be changed out but bear in mind fish hit this bait hard - or at least they did everytime I used it. Given the bait's length, they probably view the bait as some kind of lizard and we all know bass don't mess around when there's a lizard on hand to feast upon.

The textured body is a staple of Reaction Innovations and the channel in the middle of the body is great for hook placement and concealing the hook point on a TX rig

Design & Ergonomics: Reaction Innovations's Man Bear Pig is available in nineteen (19) standard colors, so it's easy to find one, or a handful of favorite colors for your local waters. Each bait is made from the same salt infused soft plastic formulation as their other baits.

Similarly to other creature baits when fish hit the bait they absolutely inhale it

Price & Applications: The bait retails for $4.79 per re-sealable bag of eight baits for a per bait cost of roughly $0.60 per bait. For a sot plastic bait of this size in today's market place, that's not too bad really.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ RI signature ribbed body design - Not really a man or a bear or a pig or any combination of the above. There are a lot of good competing creature baits on the market
+ Good consistency in the plastic
+ Very viable as an unweighted bait
+ Good color choices

If you're looking for a creature bait to unleash upon the fish in your local waters, Reaction Innovations's Man Bear Pig offers a mix of trigger inducing features

Conclusion: What are we going to do about Reaction Innovations's Man Bear Pig? We're going to put at on a hook and fish it is what we're going to do! Don't you think that fellow at Red Lobster would have liked that option? If you're unsure as to what or who I'm referring to, don't worry, it's not important. What is important is Reaction Innovations has yet another interesting bait to add to their collection and one that might very well become a staple in tackle boxes all around. It has a recognizable profile, but with a Reaction Innovations twist and it triggers some pretty aggressive strikes. If you're looking for a creature bait to unleash upon the fish in your local waters, Reaction Innovations's Man Bear Pig offers a lot of what we like about other RI branded baits in a hybrid package.
