Lure Review

Taking a Walk with Megabass's New Megadog (continued)

Position at Rest : Pause the bait or let it rest a bit after splash down and the Megadog sits with its tail in the water and its head out of the water. However, the angle at which it rests is more shallow than I would have imagined. Only the back third of the bait is actually submerged which might explain why it's so easy to get moving.

The bait features internal lateral reinforcement that resemble ribs

Design/Ergonomics: Megabass of America offers the Megadog in eleven different patterns and while they are very nice, standard patterns, this bait is screaming for some Pop-Max like specialty offerings. Specifically, I'd love to see the Megadog offered in White Python, Pumpkinseed, Shikoku Tiger, Moth-la, or PM Raigyo, but I'm probably getting ahead of myself. It's not like tackle enthusiasts would pay top dollar for specialty colors like that, would they?

Each hook tie is on a swivel to keep fish from gaining leverage to throw the bait when you're battling

Collector concerns aside, the Megadog is built to last. Inside the bait, is a skeleton like lateral reinforcement to go with a wired-through frame. All three hook hangars swivel to help keep the fish from getting the right leverage as you battle them to throw the hooks. This bait feels built for fish a lot bigger and meaner than your usual largemouth bass.

Those bearings on either side of the front hook are in channels allowing them to move side to side as you walk the bait

Price & Application: Speaking of price, Megabass of America has been doing their best to bring down the price of their lures with some debuting at under $20 now. The Megadog is not one of these lures. Given its size and weight, it'd be difficult to consider this bait anything but premium and if there's one thing Megabass knows how to do, it is premium. The Megadog retails for $59.99 a copy, but it really is one of the easiest casting and walking baits you can fish.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Super easy bait to cast (with the right equipment) - We want more Megabass-esque colors
+ Among the easiest baits to walk as I've fished
+ Rotating hook hangars to help keep fish pinned

The Megadog is my new favorite big bait to walk on top

Conclusion: Big baits are a lot of fun to fish because with each hit, the expectation is a huge fish. Anyone who's caught a six inch bass on a seven inch bait knows the promise of a big fish doesn't always hold true in bass fishing, but the anticipation and mystery is what drives the adrenaline. Move all this drama to the top of the water where you can see the actual hit and that rush of adrenaline increases three or four fold if not more. The issue with big topwater baits is they're not always the easiest to work - especially walking baits. Megabass of America's Megadog is one of those baits that eases that frustration. I cannot say enough about how easy this bait is to work and because it's so easy to work, you can fish it for however long conditions feel right for that explosive topwater hit to occur. It has quickly become one of my favorite, go to topwater baits.
