Taking Hook Organization to the Level of Obsession : BKK's OCD Tackle System (continued)

Offset Worm WG-HD : For those who like a little more meat in their hooks to go with their larger, meatier soft plastics, BKK makes their same Offset WG hook in "HD." These hooks feature a thicker wire and an epoxy resin sealed eye to prevent braid from getting caught in that usual gap in the closed loop. The differences are subtle, but side by side, you can definitely tell the WG-HD is built for more serious, heavy cover conditions.

For heavier duty applications, there is the Offset Worm WG-HD

Wire gauge comparison with the HD on top and the standard WG on bottom

The difference in wire gauge is more pronounced in this shot showing the epoxy resin coated eyelet (right) vs the standard WG on the left

This is a hook that interests me more than the standard WG mostly due to that epoxy resin sealed line tie, but the extra-gauge wire is also reassuring for situations around heavy cover. When I resort to an wide gap hook, it's usually in those types of situations.

Heavy Cover Flipping Hook : Speaking of heavy cover situations, when the bite changes up and you need to rig your flipping stick, you can pull out the OCD Box and find four boxes of BKK's Heavy Cover-Flipping Hook inside with sizes ranging from 2/0 through 5/0. Similar to the Dropshot-Long Shank hook, there's a bait keeper wrapped onto the shank of the hook, but instead of fluorocarbon, the Heavy Cover Flipping Hook's keeper is made of stainless steel. Otherwise, this hook has the same Super Slide Coating, an epoxy resin sealed line tie, and a shorter needle point tip for better durability.

I cannot tell you how many times a year I re-organize and re-strategize how to carry my flipping hooks

Plenty of room between the bait keeper and eyelet to loop your snell knot

Details like the execution of this bait keeper - in a hook - make me smile

I cannot tell you how many times a year I reorganize and re-strategize how to carry my flipping hooks. Just when I think I've settled on a good, all purpose size, I acquire another soft plastic that upsets that decision creating the need to make space in my box of flipping tackle. It doesn't help that I carry hooks from different brands and weights I probably don't really need. These little hard plastic cases of flipping hooks might just make keeping it all straight a lot easier.

Permalock : Carrying their Super Slide Coating and extra long needle point to the other side of the spectrum, BKK's Permalock hook is designed for more finesse applications. The hook's shape is designed to optimize hook penetration and retention and enable weedless presentations through the use of a center-pin style bait keeper. Simply screw the keeper into the nose of your bait, conceal the hook point in the body, and you're good to go. There are five sizes of the Permalock hook in the OCD box ranging from 1/0 through 5/0.

Permalock is what BKK is calling their hooks equipped with a free-swinging bait keeper

Hooks of this style are slowly becoming my favorite

This hook shape, with the centering-pin style keeper will likely replace my use of the offset style worm hooks because there's more leeway to get your bait straight on the hook when rigged weedless. It makes rigging just a little bit easier but also allows the bait more movement once a fish strikes giving it a better chance of lasting through the hit and ensuing battle without tearing at the head.

Permalock - Weighted: For situations that call for the same rigging as the Permalock hook, but with some weight at the nose, BKK offers a weighted option with a flanged, lead weight at the bait keeper position instead of the spring-like center pin. Size options are the same as the non-weighted variant, and there are two weight options per hook size that can be seen in the photo below.

Weighted options of this same hook style are my preference

BKK sells this weighted keeper separately in case you were wondering

Weighted options of this same hook style are actually my preference though usually somewhere along the shank of the hook. This implementation makes weedless presentations in Neko techniques much more simple and eliminates the loss of nail weights. This also makes an intriguing option for rigging tube style baits.

Hyperlatch 70-SS UL : Lastly, BKK includes in the OCD box, light wire treble hooks for hard baits made with the same Super Slide Coating, longer needle points, and an acute angle at the bend. Their Hyperlatch 70-SS UL trebles are included in sizes 2 through 8.

The inclusion of treble hooks in the OCD Box felt a little out of place. Nevertheless, there are five sizes included in the box

Appropriate or not, first impression of these light wire trebles is very good

Quick Take: The challenge with a pre configured system such as this is whether or not all the hook shapes are appropriate for your style of fishing. For me, it just so happens I do fish the nine hook shapes included in this box, consistently, however, I may choose options like the Offset Worm WG-HD and not use the standard WG: same with the weighted Permalock versus the unweighted option. That aside, the benefit of having all of these options together in one place in a manner that is easy to reference in boxes that are clearly labeled eliminating the need to rifle through flat packaging like a deck of cards to find what I need is very worthwhile. Is it worth $299? That question is difficult to quantify.

Naturally, the OCD box is also available empty or in a starter kit with about thirty (30), empty hook cases

Now, if you prefer to customize your own OCD system, there are options. First, BKK does sell an OCD Starter Kit that comes with the storage case and a mix of the smaller, individual hook boxes inside the case you can fill with your essentials. This way, you can choose the hooks and sizes you know you'll use. Retail for this option, without hooks, is only $39.99. If you just want the large, overall box, it's also available for $24.99. The smaller, Armour Point Hook and Accessory boxes sell for $4.99 per pack of five. So BKK offers a number of ways to accomplish the same goal, and rest assured their selection of hook shapes goes well beyond what was shown here. In fact, their Titan Diver Hook is already a favorite of mine, and from the looks of it, that won't be the last shape I come to appreciate.
