A First Look at the Boldly Styled Upcoming Halo Rods Black
Widow Bass Series (Continued)

The
Black Widow's lower section continues the red spider theme
with metallic cross carbon wrapping that showcases red highlights throughout the pattern,
and also matches the reel locking fore-nut perfectly. The more I fished these
rods the more the red and black styling, especially the grips, reminded me more
of Carnage from Spider Man, versus the well known Spy/Avenger sharing the same
name as the rod series. Either way, just another entertaining way to look at a
rod that Halo seems to have purposely designed to be bold and unmistakable in
appearance.

The exposed reel seat allows
anglers to get four finger access to the blank
The Black Widow's casting reel seat provides
complete access to the blank so that when palming the reel I was able to
comfortably get four of my fingers underneath the reel and in contact with
the blank. I haven't seen the spinning reel yet but have been told that
Fuji TSV seats were selected for use on the two spinning rods that will be
launched in parallel with the other eight casting rods that makeup the rest of
the series.

In advance of the show I've only been able to fish
with the Black Widow rods for a few days I have found the rods to be light
overall and have a pretty lively tip design. The tapers vary from Medium to
Extra Heavy and rod lengths from 6'10" to 7'11" covering everything from finesse
fishing with plastics to punching applications.

The rods have an oversized first
guide design for line management. The guides are made of stainless steel and
fitted with SIC inserts
In terms of hardware the rod is outfitted with
stainless steel guides that are finished in a nickel-gunmetal color and
outfitted with SIC inserts for use with the complete spectrum of mono,
fluorocarbon, and braided lines. I did notice that when I was fishing with these
rods they cast well and an oversized leading guide design helps with more fluid
line management.

I've already caught a few fish
with the Halo Black Widow rods and am finding the rods both light and
responsive. Is this is deadly option for $159 dollars? I'll resume tests when we
get back from ICAST, but one thing for sure there is plenty of fun factor
infused into these boldly styled rods
Since Halo introduced their first rods Halo has
been known for delivering reasonably priced rods and even though the Black Widow
features more premium components and definitely ups the ante from some of their
existing lines they are still very aggressively priced at only $159.99 per rod.
After we get through all the ICAST madness I'll pick the Halo Black Widow back
up and put it through the complete gamut of tests but until then we wanted to
provide a sneak peek at the new series. We look forward to checking out the
entire Halo rod's Black Widow lineup next week. Next stop... Orlando, Florida.
