Total Score: 8.17 - GREAT

Introduction:
In 2020, we shared with you the bait collaboration between two legends in the JDM bass fishing world, Katsutaka Imae of Imakatsu and Yuki Ito of Megabass. The bait, of course, was the IxI Shad. Now, half a decade later, this partnership has spawned yet another little gem promising to light up your topwater cranking experience. Here's our look at the new IxI Blowly.

Time for a new collab between Katsutaka Imae and Yuki Ito, the IxI Blowly

Impressions: Imakatsu's hard bait catalog is relatively small, while Megabass's is quite vast. I bring this up because a close look at the IxI Blowly makes me think of two Megabass baits, the S-Crank for the IxI's shape and the Cyclone, for the water-channeling cavities at the bait's gill. Perhaps the Imakatsu influence is in the overall size of this bait, measuring just one and three quarter inches (1 3/4") at the body and weighing just nine and a half grams (9.5g = ~0.335oz). The IxI Shad, Katsutaka Imae and Yuki Ito's first collaboration, was also a very diminutive bait.

The channels through the bait to direct water is not a new concept. Megabass used this in their Cyclone crank series (right)

Real World Tests: Regardless the recipe for Ito and Imae's collaboration, what I wanted to find out is how tasty the tiny morsel of the IxI Blowly is to those green fish we all like to pursue so much. To that end, I relied once again on my shallow cranking combo for the year, one of my self wrapped Point Blank PB731HXF sticks paired with my Shimano Conquest 31HG spooled with #3 Varivas Monster PE Si-X and a leader of ten pound (10lb) Sunline Shooter.

The IxI Blowly is rated at 3/8oz (0.375oz)

It tipped our scale at 9.5grams or 0.335oz

Castability: Holding the bait's hooks tight to the body and shaking it in hand reveals a very subtle rattling sound almost to the point you could classify the IxI Blowly as being a silent runner - almost. More important, though, is the fact, this test reveals there are no moving bearings inside the bait to aid in casting performance. Yet, despite the lack of such momentum assisting technology, this little 9.5 gram crank is easy to present on a medium heavy powered casting rod. Especially when paired with the likes of a reel similar to the Conquest 31HG.

Water exits underneath the flared gills

Dive Time: The IxI Blowly is a very shallow runner getting down, by my estimation, no more than two or three feet. The interesting thing about this bait is, it does not come back to you in a straight line but rather kicks off to the side every now and then like some vibrating jigs tend to do.

A look at the IxI Blowly's diving bill

I don't know if this is caused by the water channel in the head responding to micro-currents or what, but it's a very interesting behavior and one that inspires confidence when it comes to triggering strikes. Casting up close to shore in shallow water situations, most of my hits came within a few cranks of the handle.

Wild Craw

I couldn't find a specification for the bait's brand of hooks, but typical of most JDM baits, the IxI Blowly's hooks are thin wire with a good bite and holding power. Of course, I was only using a ten pound leader, so angler beware if you're the type to use straight, fifty pound braid or something similar in these situations.

The IxI Blowly is equipped with two #6 hooks

Design/Ergonomics: When it comes to intricacy in the design of a crankbait, it's difficult to do more than what Ito and Imae have accomplished with the IxI Blowly. The unique water funneling channels and detailed color patterns make for an Enthusiast delicacy worthy of a Michelin Star. Unlike a Michelin Star dish, however, the IxI Blowly is available in twelve different presentations keeping things relatively basic for a JDM bait. Of course, I wouldn't put it past the creators to offer limited colors and editions as JDM manufacturers are wont to do.

Not very difficult to land your catch when they almost choke on the bait

Price & Application: If there's a downfall to this bait, it's in the cost to acquire. At $19.99 a bait, that's like $2.10 per gram or over $950 per pound. Even A5 grade Wagyu beef from Japan tops out somewhere around $500 per pound. .

Performance Casts better than expected and gets right to work when you crank that handle 9
Price As with most Megabass branded baits, price is the downfall, but at least this one is under $20! 7
Features Water channels in the head described as sound producing, but I think it causes the bait to skip to the side every now and then triggering strikes even in open water 8
Design (Ergonomics) 12 very appealing colors in a traditional crankbait profile 8
Application If shallow water cranking is your game, this bait belongs on your team 8

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Casts really well for its size - On the pricier side
+ Erratic swimming action to trigger strikes
+ Sharp hooks that hold fast

Big Baits and BFS may command all the attention these days, but baits like the IxI Blowly are still a lot of fun to tie on, toss out, and crank up

Conclusion: Maybe I'm falling out of touch with the brand, but I feel like the IxI Blowly kind of snuck into virtual store shelves under the radar. Perhaps, with all this attention to BFS and Big Bait tackle and techniques, conventional baits like a crank, simply aren't exciting enough to garner attention in the anti-social, social world of bass fishing groups, discussion forums, and the gram. Well, I'm here to say that if you've been overlooking this bait because it's not trendy, you're missing out on some fish catching fun. If you've hadn't heard about it up until this article, well, now's our chance.
