Event Article: 2006 ICAST Reel Coverage

ICAST Coverage Day 1 (Reels) - Paradise for Reel Enthusiasts in Las Vegas (continued)

Ardent: Ardent is a relative newcomer to reels, but continues to gain popularity among anglers looking for a quality reel that is 100% made in the good old US of A. "American anglers have not been able to purchase a Made in the U.S.A. fishing reel for years, and now they finally have a choice" said David Grey, Chairman of Ardent Reels. For ICAST Ardent updates their XS baitcasting reel with a number of new features.

The only 100% made in the USA mass produced reel...the Ardent XS

New for 2006, the Ardent XS features a new quick release sideplate that allows easy access to the centrifugal braking system. It also features a new coating that not only looks more hi-tech but better protects the reel from the elements.

The new finish is more attractive and tougher

The Ardent XS weighs in at 8.7oz and features a 6:1 gear ratio. The XS was designed to fit ergonomically in your palm and is still made out of magnesium. One added bonus for this reel is that every one comes backed with a 3-year warranty.

In addition to the XS, Ardent is working on prototypes for their first spinning reel. While the look and feel are still in the design phase we can tell you that this reel will also be a 100% American made reel and will feature a completely from the ground up designed drag system dubbed the "Ardent Strike Saver." More on this as details come in.

Conclusion: In a single day the reel landscape in the US has taken a dramatic turn. All the Tier 1 reel manufacturers have stepped it up when it comes to releasing premium products, and have made a significant statement by addressing the enthusiast market head on. The quality level of mainstream product has also improved, and reels with materials that were once considered exotic are being implemented in sub 100 dollar reels. Perhaps most refreshing of all is the level of innovation that we witnessed at this year. Manufacturers are using technology to overcome performance barriers, but still making sure to stay true to the roots of their respective brands.
