Line Review

Going Old School with PLine's PF Original Copoly (continued)

Features: PLine Original is made in only one color that the manufacturer calls Smoke Blue. There are no special coatings on the product and you can find it on filler spools of 300 yards on up to bulk spools of 3000 yards. However, by far the most common spool I've seen is the two and a half inch (2 -1/2") high by two and three quarter inch (2-3/4") diameter mini-bulk spool of varying yardage. This spool does not have any special clips to preserve the tag end of the remaining line.

Design & Ergonomics: As mentioned earlier, PLine PF Original does have some memory issues after sitting on the spool either overnight or an extended period of time, but this issue is no better or worse than other lines I've fished. On the plus side, I've gone an entire season with the 6lb test spooled on my spinning reels without the need to refresh the line, so longevity is very good.

The lower pound test, like 6lb, handles much better and is a good choice on spinning gear.

The average actual diameter of our 12lb PLine PF Original, as mentioned earlier, was 0.330mm, but is specified as 0.311mm. The average for the 17 products in our baseline test came to 0.311mm with an average overall breaking strength of 12.3lbs. Our 0.330mm Pline's average breaking strength was 19.1 lbs, so this line really is stronger by diameter than average, but the manufacturer is not taking advantage of that fact by selling it anywhere close to its true breaking strength. Instead, they're doing their product a disservice by listing diameters that are smaller than what the product actually is, and breaking strengths that are under.

Here memory is a little less of an issue.

Clarity of Pline PF Original is average at best because it's a colored line, but it's not cloudy nor does it become cloudy with extended use - unless it becomes abraded. But if a section does becomes abraded, you should retie anyway.

PLine Original is a pretty versatile line and available in strengths all the way up to 130lbs!

Applications: PLine Original comes in strengths all the way up to 130lb test. Applications for different species are obviously pretty open. As far as bass fishing is concerned, this is a pretty universal fishing line as well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it in any of the categories we list in our ratings table including heavy cover. It wouldn't be my first choice in this situation of course, but it should hold up as well or better than a typical nylon monofilament given its performance on our abrasion machine.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Good handling characteristics - Rating of our 12lb test was way off
+ Good knot strength
+ My former go to line for finesse applications

PLine's Original copoly is still a favorite of mine.

Conclusion: PLine has really grown since my introduction to the product back in the late 1980s. Their best selling line is probably their CXX copolymer, so we'll probably be adding it to our review queue before long. Even so, don't turn your back on the Original if you get a chance to fish it. Realize that the line's rating may be off, but for the price, longevity, and relatively good handling characteristics, it's a good choice - especially in finesse situations.
