Swimbait Review

Accessible, Affordable, and More Importantly, Effective : Molix's GlideBait 140 SS (continued)

The GlideBait 140 SS performs perfectly fine with a snap. In fact, it swims surprisingly well. One of the complaints about ABS big baits is their lack of character. On a constant retrieve, the GlideBait 140 SS demonstrates plenty. It has a nice, tight swimming motion resulting in that coveted thump through your line. If you pause your retrieve or introduce some erratic starts and stops, the bait will dance from side to side and glide off about a foot or so - which is a lot for a bait of this size. It swims so well that, frankly, it surprised me. This bait is very effective at any method of retrieve you may choose.

I found the GlideBait 140 SS to be surprisingly effective

On splash down or a pause, the GlideBait 140 SS sits with a perfectly neutral body position and will sink slowly at a rate of roughly a foot every second and a half to two seconds. I fished it on immediate retrieve after splash down over the top of weed beds, so never really gave it a chance to sink very far. When fished in this manner, the bait swims at a depth of about three, maybe four feet.

The realistic dorsal

Design/Ergonomics: I've touched up on the fact the GlideBait 140 SS comes with swiveling hook hangars and flexible fins. Another feature this bait has is large, moving bearings inside the bait cavity which allow the bait to produce a deep knocking sound. Something I imagine mimics the sound of wood or even that of some resin glides when the baits swim. Without a knocker, ABS plastic baits are more silent and are absent that element of drawing power.

The tail appears to be replaceable, but a firm tug did nothing to dislodge it nor is the bait packaged with spare fins.

The GlideBait 140 SS is available in six standard colors for now. Three of these colors are bluegill variations. I'd like to see the addition of the mat white from the GlideBait 178 SS collection along with a crappie, pumpkinseed, or other panfish colors. It'd certainly spicen up the excitement for a bait that has a lot of potential.

Despite some hook rash, durability of the finish is pretty good.

Durability wise, the finishes on the GlideBait 140 SS hold up relatively well. Other than the usual hook rash, I didn't have much of an issue with the finish prematurely flaking off. The stock hooks are good quality and very sticky, and the swiveling hangars certainly help with landing ratio. The flexible fins have held in place and while the tail appears to maybe be removable, is fixed into the bait pretty well. The bait is not packaged with any spare fin parts.

When a bait goes into the rotation to test a new rod (Megabass's US P5 Mark-56), you know it has my seal of approval.

Price & Availability: An area where mass produced, ABS baits win is usually in price point. At $28.49, Molix's Glide Bait 140 SS is easily accessible. What's more, it's usually in stock and available for purchase at your authorized Molix retailer. If there's one thing I do not enjoy about garage built baits is their inconsistent, and sometimes non-existent availability. I understand it, but that doesn't mean I like it. On the flip side, when a bait is readily available, it often gets taken for granted because anglers feel they can grab one at any time.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Swims well in any method of retrieve - Could use more color options (like crappie)
+ Internal knocker adds a dimension of draw - No spare fins in the packaging
+ Very affordable
+ Does not require a dedicated swimbait combo to fish

Now that I'm done with this writeup, I'm going to go out and catch a few more on this bait before the weather cools down.

Conclusion: If Molix's GlideBait 140 SS is indicative of anything, it's the fact you shouldn't judge a bait by its origins. Despite its effectiveness, I'm pretty certain it's a bait that will fly under the radar simply due to its mass produced nature, and that's a shame. Swim it fast, swim it slow, chop your retrieve and the GlideBait 140 SS responds. It is accessible, affordable, durable, but most of all effective. So effective it surprised me. I can't explain it, nor do I really want to. What this bait makes me want to do is to tie it on, toss it out, and crank it up! Remember that slogan? Yes, I know it's not a crank bait, but a bait like this could inspire another annual theme. If your ultimate goal is to catch fish, I'd recommend you check this bait out. In the meantime, I'm going to go out and catch a few more on this bait before the weather cools down.
