Enthusiast Review

Megabass's Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Whimey, Bassy Wassy, Sonic Fishing Stick (continued)

Design/Ergonomics: Naturally, this is the first thing you notice about these rods - their design. Yuki Ito must be a fan of Dr. Who because the handle design of the F4.5-610ti evokes imagery of the good Dr's sonic screwdriver more than it does traditional katana. Of course, only Megabass can pull off something as eccentric as this and make it work.

Back to our standard scoring matrix we can say the Elseil Evoluzion C40's grip is very comfortable to hold. The rod's balance is surprisingly excellent, but of course, it comes at a price as its weight, at just over five ounces, is average for a stick of this length and power. While there are a lot of different colors on this rod, they are in excellent harmony and all the little labels, designations, and marketing points are small and discretely placed so as not to distract from the task at hand.

And of course, this detail is on both ends of the split grip.

Granted, if you're one to extend your fingers above the foregrip to finger your line as you're fishing soft plastics, the funky sonic screwdriver design of the reel seat's locking mechanism will likely annoy you. It's a beautifully crafted piece, and the hard looking edges are rounded, but the shape might annoy you. I don't hold my rod in this manner so it never bothered me.

The subtle contours of the butt end help with grip when casting with two hands.

Application: The former Elseil Evoluzion was a really excellent rod for moving baits but lacked a certain something for vertical technique applications. That something was just a little more oomph in the blank. The F4.5-610ti adds just a touch more of that "oomph", but it's enough. This stick is a wonderful Search for One candidate as it can do it all from cranks and spinners to jigs and soft plastics. Megabass hit a home run with the power, taper, and length of this stick.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Haven't you always wanted a sonic fishing stick? - To own this rod is not a trivial matter
+ That rare combination of power, taper, and length that can handle just about any style of fishing
+ First production rod we've fished with Fuji's new Torzite guides

Don't blink. Don't even think about it. Don't turn away, and never ever, let this stick out of your sight - Megabass's F4.5-610ti is not one to miss.

Conclusion: Don't blink. Don't even think about it. Don't turn away, and never ever, let this stick out of your sight. If you do, and you have a fishing partner like mine, he may very well run away with this stick. Megabass's new F4.5-610ti is a stick with which you can fish any number of techniques and fish them well. It takes the limits of what you can do aesthetically with a bass rod to the very limit without stepping over the line and being garish. It is a line that only someone who has won several non-endemic design awards can understand and walk - Yuki Ito is one such designer. The F4.5-610ti Elseil Evoluzion C40 defines our Ultimate Enthusiast Award category.
