Are You Ready For Some Football!! ... Jigs? (continued)

River2Sea: A company with no shortage of bait offerings brings back an old favorite among veteran bass pros - a football style deep water jig with a flat rubber skirt. River2Sea's Touch Down Flat Rubber Football jig took a year or two to finally debut in store shelves and now that it's finally here, the question is, was it worth the wait?

Introducing River2Sea's Touch Down Jig.

The Skirt: So what's the deal with flat rubber versus round? Some would argue it's a finer material that flares and pulsates more when standing still in the water. We don't necessarily buy this argument but can say the skirt that comes with these Touch Down jigs is of really good quality and hand tied to the jighead for added security. And yes, our underwater shots reveal that they do indeed flare quite nicely.

Football anyone? Check out the unique, matte finish on this jighead.

Hook: River2Sea does not advertise the brand of the hook used on their Touch Down jig, but it is one of medium gauge with a very good point. The hook is shielded by a light, twenty-four strand week guard that comes trimmed to a good length right out of the package.

Not a name brand hook but sharp and durable nonetheless.

Line Tie: The line tie for the Touch Down jig is at ninety-degrees to the hook shank and at a good position to work the jig in and out of rock crevices especially when hopped. It does protrude from the jig head rather prominently so there is no protection of the knot against obstacles.

The jig's weedguard is fishable right out of the package.

Durability: The matte finish of the Touch Down jig is quite durable. We fished the same jigs continuously on several trips hopping and dragging them along bottom only to see little to no wear on the heads from the abuse. We were actually quite impressed. So much so we threw a few up in the air in front of TT HQ to see what damage the sidewalk might incur on them and the result? Barely a scratch - impressive indeed.

Fine, flat rubber at its finest... check out the compact, yet wide flare of this skirt.

Availability: One bonus this particular product has over most of the others in this roundup is availability. River2Sea is hardly a secret brand and their product is well stocked in tackle store shelves throughout the country if not the world. Even if not, they are pervasive on the Internet and easily located in many of the more popular e-tail shops.

Pluses and Minuses:

                 Plus                                    Minus

J Hand tied quality in a mass produced bait L Not the most affordable jig in our roundup
J Return of the flat rubber jig L What happend to River2Sea's use of tungsten?
J Good quality hook
J Finish on the jigheads is durable

Black with a blue trailer has been a staple on the Delta in the early part of 2008.

Effectiveness: Despite the blatantly exposed line tie on this jig, it's just as fishable as any of the others in our roundup. The one bit of curiosity we all had with this jig was why it's not made of a material other lead? Not to take anything away from this current product, but with River2Sea's determination to go green in many of their other baits, it seems quite obvious, to us anyway, that they should be one of the pioneers of the tungsten jig movement, yet they are not. It's almost like a missed extra-point for this Touch Down or a lost opportunity for a sure fire, go-ahead two point conversion.
