Are You Ready For Some Football!! ... Jigs? (continued)

Bass Stalker Rock Stalker: The Original Bass Stalker Jigs were, for a time, a hot commodity amongst jig fisherman for the unique concave bottom heads designed to slow the descent of the bait down the water column. In addition to the enticingly slow fall, the unique head design allowed the bait to sit upright on the bottom with little difficulty. Bass Stalker has leveraged this same feature into an entire series of jigs and today, we take a look at their interpretation of the football jig, the Rock Stalker.

Introducing Uncle Josh's Bass Stalker, Rock Stalker Jig.

The Skirt: The Rock Stalker features an intricate silicone skirt held in place by a rubber collar that doubles as a rattle holster. The rattles, however, are not included with the bait. Surprisingly, even though the skirt is not hand tied, its flare in the water is very respectable.

The silicone skirt of the Rock Stalker is held in place by this rubber collar that doubles as a rattle holster.

Hook: The hook on the Rock Stalker is by Gamakatsu and it is shielded by a pair of seven strand wires providing a no-trim solution that is stealthy and effective. Also on the hook is a pre-rigged Kalin's double tail grub in a complimentary color held in place by a barbed baitkeeper molded from the head along the shank of the hook. This jig is pretty much ready to go right out of the package.

Protection from weeds and cover is provided by these two seven strand wires.

Line Tie: The Rock Stalker features a forty-five degree line tie that is integrated into the shape of he head - another nice design feature. Though your knot is still exposed, this design does provide a degree of protection you might not otherwise have.

The Rock Stalker features a semi-concealed line tie.

Durability: The rubber collar of this jig is pretty thick and holds up well over time. The head design is unique and effective though maybe not completely necessary in a football head type jig. The paint holds up surprisingly well even when subjected to our torture tests on rough concrete sidewalks.

The trademark concave dimple on the underside of all Bass Stalker jighead products.

Availability: All Rock Stalker products are now manufactured and distributed under the larger, Uncle Josh umbrella and as such are readily available online and at select brick and mortar tackle shops. There should be little difficulty locating this product.

We had better luck with the flare of this silicone skirt but would still prefer a hand tie for even better results.

Ratings (We've re-calibrated our ratings standard for 2008 and have included a key at the bottom of the following matrix as a guide):

7.25
Ratings Key: Ratings Key: 1 = terrible : 2 = poor : 3 = lacking : 4 = sub par : 5 = mediocre : 6 = fair : 7 = good : 8 = great : 9 = excellent : 10 = unbelievable!

Pluses and Minuses:

                 Plus                                    Minus

J Innovative head design L Skirt held on by a rubber collar rather than a tie.
J Gammy Hooks L A tad pricey
J Complimentary matching trailer
J Durable head

Effectiveness: I've been a fan of the Bass Stalker product for some time and am happy to see them still producing a good selection of jigs. The Rock Stalker catches fish though I was hoping for a little more security in how the skirt is fastened to the jig. Certainly the other features of this jig more than make up for this one potential shortcoming and the innovative head design is this baits biggest bonus of all.
