Are You Ready For Some Football!! ... Jigs? (continued)

Kevkel: Approximately one month ago, we presented our first review on this company's product, their LouveredLeaf Spinnerbait. Today, we look at another of their unique creations, a jig with the added flare of hair - rabbit hair to be exact. Presenting Kevkel's football head jig.

Introducing Kevkel's take on the football head jig.

The Skirt: The Kevkel football head jig features a hand tied, silicone skirt with the typical length and bulk of a flipping jig. This is a good feature if you're one that likes to custom cut your skirt depending on the situation. But of course, the most notable feature of this bait is the inclusion of the rabbit hair trailer that, out of the package, extends the length of the jig about two fold. This jig provides a huge profile when moving in the water and should really appeal to those accustomed to tossing swimbaits!

The jig's line tie is at 90d to the hook shank and right on top of the jig head.

Hook: Kevkel continues their tradition of providing quality components with the use of Gamakatsu hooks on all their jigs. Shielding this hook from cover is a twenty-four strand weedguard that most will want to trim, but even if not, the guard's fibers are so thin, it can be fished at stock length with little issue.

If there's a downside to this jig, it's in the non-fully painted head - note the bait keeper at the base of the hook is unfinished.

Line Tie: Position of the line tie on these jigs is ninety-degrees to the hook shank and the more traditional location for a football style jig that's designed to be fished in relatively deep water. This positioning, in theory, makes it easier to lift the jig out of snags should the head get caught between a rock and a hard place.

The 24-strand weed guard is light and easily displaced during a hookset swing

Durability: Our collection of Kevkel jigs have held up relatively well. Some scuffing and loss of paint on the jigheads is to be expected, but the skirt and rabbit hair trailer have also held up through several months of use.

The head itself features a very nice paint job.

Availability: Kevkel Baits is a relatively small operation with limited production capabilities. They're still working on putting up a website, but if you're not local to the Bay Area, and are interested in purchasing some of these baits, you can do so by dialing 1.408.988.1785.

Pluses and Minuses:

                 Plus                                    Minus

J Unique trailer included L On the pricey side for a jig
J Incredible bulk for a jig L Tough to find right now
J Gammy Hooks L Just a touch rough around the unfinished edges
J Hand tied quality

As with the Dandy Bait's jig, the silicone skirt on the Kevkel does not flare much in cold water environments but the rabbit hair trailer makes up for this shortcoming.

Effectiveness: Fishing this bait is almost the same as tossing a big swimbait. It's just hard to get your head around the idea that fish will engulf this thing, but the live, pulsating action of that rabbit hair trailer really does act as an attractant and helps provide some colder water liveliness associated with traditional, living rubber jigs. Additionally, this trailer, along with the extra-long silicone skirt can all be trimmed to provide a smaller profile yet still maintain a good amount of the jig's bulk. The ninety degree line tie is a plus when fishing almost vertical and the hand tied quality holds up well under abuse. All in all, an interesting option in a segment of indistinguishable baits.
