Lure Review

Delta Wood Bombers Enters the Bait Frey with Sinister (continued)

Zander and I hit the California Delta and I tried again. The bait really sailed through the air when cast on this setup, but the proof in the pudding came when I clicked the reel over and tried to walk the Sinister again. Voila, this time it worked! And it worked quite easily. The Sinister sides from side to side more like a giant Zara Spook rather than Black Dog Bait Company's Lunker Punker. That is where part of my difficulty with this bait started is that I assumed it'd fish similar to the Punker, but the different body shapes really make them different.

From the multi-loop split rings...

At rest, the Sinister sits very even to the surface of the water. Traditionally, baits that sit a little more with their tail down in the water are a bit easier to walk, so that explains some of the Sinister's finicky nature. But again matched with the right rod, reel, and line, made all the difference in the world.

Features: We haven't cut one open (yet) to validate, but the Sinister supposedly comes with an internal harness. I always find it fascinating how companies, and individual lure makers, can do this with a wooden lure. Naturally, the Sinister is not made to be fished in a weeded area, the number of available finishes are good. Miscellaneous features for this bait has include the swiveling hook eyes at the bottom of the bait made popular by 22nd Century and their TripleTrout bait and super stout split rings attaching the 4x strong VMC hooks to the bait.

Design/Ergonomics: I purchased a handful of these baits and they've all been very consistent in quality and performance. The weight of the smaller, 5" size will probably be easier for most to handle, especially for black bass, but the larger, 6" size is my favorite. Must be something about that big baits for big fish mentality.

... to the 4x VMC hooks.

The one bit of realism this bait does have is in Delta Wood Bomber's use of realistic eyes inset in an actual eye socket. It's a nice touch to an overall simple shape and body design.

Delta Wood Bombers builds all their lures right in Sacramento, California.

Application: Designed with striped bass in mind, the Sinister, by Delta Wood Bombers, is a good topwater bait for any species of fish that will hit a walk the dog type bait. So of course, largemouth bass are entirely within this baits wheelhouse.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Handmade wood lures are always fun - Tough to work on braid, but easy on heavy mono
+ Casts really well
+ Super stout stock hardware

Conclusion: The real reason for the delay in getting the Sinister written up is I wanted a chance to throw this bait against those colorful, toothy critters that swim in the stained waters of the Amazon River. Unfortunately, after two years of postponements due to less than ideal water conditions, it was time to move on.

Built to target striper, those green fish with big mouths will also hit this bait!

If you're a fan, as am I, of handmade lures no matter the material - but especially wood, then you need to add Delta Wood Bomber's Sinister to your collection. Matched with the right rod, reel, and line, this bait is a blast to fish.
