Does Berkley Trilene Big Game Still Stack Up? (continued)

Features: Berkley Trilene Big Game is available in five different colors and a variety of spool options from 275 yards to 6000 yards to suit our needs. There are no special coatings on the line and the line comes in pretty basic packaging. There was no clip on the 1,500 yard spool to help keep the tag end of the remaining line in check.

12 years later and still perfectly fishable!

Design & Ergonomics: The best story for memory and longevity we can offer is a time Zander and I hit a local South Bay Reservoir lately in between rain storms. He brought with him a reel he hadn't used in close to a decade. He told me he grabbed it out of desperation and didn't even have time to respool it. The reel was originally spooled about twelve (12) years ago with Berkley Big Game and while it obviously had some memory on his first few casts, he was able to fish that reel all day with no line failures of any kind.

Now Big Game is Zander's go to line on the California Delta.

Zander adds, "Though Big Game may not have the most consistent diameters, or the best clarity, it absolutely lives up to the well-earned reputation it has for both reliability and toughness. It may not be the most refined but Trilene Big Game is certainly well rounded for such a reasonably priced monofilament line."

The line exhibits memory issues like all nylon monofilament, but not nearly as bad as others we've fished.

With a name like Big Game, one would assume this fishing line is a little thicker than other brands, but as it turns out, our 10lb test Big Game measured out on average at 0.298mm with an average breaking strength of 11.8 pounds. The average over our 17 branded lines was 0.311mm at 12.3lbs.

Applications: Given the cost of this line it's hard to imagine any application where you wouldn't want to try it taking precaution to up your line diameter in situations where abrasion might be an issue. Certainly it's not as sensitive as other line options for vertical bait presentations, but otherwise, this is an excellent choice in line for general purpose applications.

Conclusion (by Zander): People often ask why I use Trilene Big Game so much in so many of my reviews of other reels or rods. Yes, the line is reasonably priced which makes it a good choice for spooling up so many different rigs but it really has become one of my go to lines. I started using Trilene Big Game not for bass fishing but over fifteen years ago when I was spending a lot of my time targeting saltwater species including Salmon and Tuna. Through these applications I learned to respect Big Game's strength, reliability and value when it came to spooling up big reels to tackle big fish. When I started to fish for largemouth I turned to what I had experience with, and Trilene Big Game soon was beings spooled on all my baitcasters and even a few spinning reels, it was also the very first line that I ever reviewed, all the way back in 2002, so it was about time for a refresh with our much more in depth line testing equipment and methodology.

Zander, "Today I still find that Trilene Big Game does a reasonable job for power fishing applications."

Today I still find that Trilene Big Game does a reasonable job for power fishing applications, and while it may not be a supple as many newer lines it does offer good shock and relatively low memory. I like the way it handles with all but the lightest baits and still use it when casting reaction baits or pitching plastics in the stained water of the California Delta. While the line sensitivity is perfectly acceptable when compared with other mono lines I now find that it is far less sensitive to fluorocarbon lines, which I now use predominately for any finesse applications or spinning work.
