Reel Review

A Classic is Re-Made : Abu Garcia's Morrum ZX 3600/01 (continued)

Design & Ergonomics: This is where one's affinity or lack there of for round reels will come to roost. Palmability is usually where round reels suffer in the hands of public opinion. The Morrum ZX 3601 compares well to the 100 sized round reels from Shimano and Daiwa, so it's almost as small as a round reel gets and is actually very easy to get your hands around as long as you have medium to large sized hands. Where some might have difficulty are the hard edges of the Morrum.

The EVA foam knobs on this reel.

Otherwise, the handle length on this reel is a very generous ninety (90) millimeters. The knobs are made from a comfortable EVA foam though I don't care for this material on a reel knob very much. Overall weight of this reel at 7.2 ounces is great for a round reel and breakdown is actually very easy too.

Application: Looking for an all purpose application type reel? The Morrum ZX 3600/01's only real limitation is line capacity, but you can mitigate this by choosing 30lb braid and tying on a leader of fluorocarbon or nylon monofilament. This reel works really well for horizontal bait presentations like shallow to medium running cranks, spinnerbaits, and lipless cranks to vertical presentation techniques like jigs and soft plastics. Paired with the right rod and spooled with the right line, you can fish this reel in finesse applications and topwater with ease. For big baits, well, that line capacity issue surfaces once again but if you can resolve that with a braid and leader combo, this reel has the right retrieve ratio to pull big baits too.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Exquisitely built - A little noisy on the retrieve
+ Very versatile - I'd like to see some rubberized knobs of some sort on this reel
+ Insane max drag value
+ As fun to look at as it is to fish

Conclusion: The classic look and feel of round reels will always have a place in my fishing arsenal. Abu Garcia's Morrum ZX 3600/01 was a long time in the re-making and now that it's finally here, I'm glad because I really enjoyed fishing this reel. From the IVCB-4 brakes, to the long, 90 millimeter handle, to it's machined look and feel, Abu Garcia has done a great job redefining this classic piece of machinery.

Abu Garcia's Morrum easily wins our Ultimate Enthusiast Award!

Certainly it's not perfect, but what reel really is? Considering its flexibility supporting different techniques and how much fun it is to hold onto and fish with, it's about as close as you can get. When a redefined classic is as much fun to fish with as this reel is, you know that can only mean one thing. Abu Garcia's Morrum ZX 3600/3601 wins TackleTour's Ultimate Enthusiast Award!
