Glide Week : ABT Lures Squeezes In With the Suicide (continued)

Features: There were really no extra features to speak of with this bait. It comes in a cardboard box lined with foam, but there was no spare tail in our package. It is available in one rate of fall (slow sink) and only a handful of colors : Rainbow Trout, Golden Trout, & Hitch for now with planned offerings in Shasta Trout, Carp, and Kokanee. It's a pretty basic, no frills bait built to be fished... and fished hard.

The Suicide Glide comes with a soft plastic tail.

Design/Ergonomics: We only purchased two baits to test, but given these are hand built in a small shop, and consistency from bait to bait is very good. Its weight at 4.5 ounces for a 9 inch bait is also very good. Realism of the Suicide Glide is above average with pronounced fins, gill plate and mouth contours and realistic eyes. As far as we know it's available in just the one size and two sink rates.

Movement at the joint is about average for baits of this style.

Application: This bait can be fished at just about any speed and with a steady or erratic retrieve. It doesn't dance as wildly as some of the other baits in our Glide Week roundup, but it's slow and steady swimming action is very enticing and it does not need a kick start at the beginning of the retrieve. Just click over your reel, begin your retrieve and the Suicide Glide will swim back to the boat. This is a big bait sized appropriately for big bites, but given that, it's easy to throw - as long as you're accustomed to baits of this size.

Conclusion: The Suicide Glide by ABT Lures is very reminiscent of the California swimbait craze. It's available in limited quantities in only a handful of colors with word of mouth spreading in all the regional discussion forums dedicated to throwing swimbaits. This bait is just hitting the scene as we write this so availability is somewhat limited. We found ours at a tackle shop in the South Bay Area called Coyote Bait and Tackle who were the first to bring them in.

ABT reminds us they're just as capable of producing a quality big bait as any other California manufacturer.
