Swimbait Review

Rat Rumble : 2 Faced Baits's Waking Rat (continued)

Once I began my retrieve, however, I could see the bait swims straight and true with a nice, modest wake and the faintest of knocks. This bait will perform all three fighting styles (wake, walk, crankdown) with ease, but I fished it pretty much in traditional waking mode only. I think this is where the bait is at its best. Plus, not only is this the easiest way to fish the rat baits, it's also the most fun.

Waking one up on the mouse

Drawing Power: 2Faced Baits's Waking Rat moves a decent amount of water and if conditions are calm and quiet, you can hear a faint knock as it swims back to your position. Its sound is pretty much what I've come to expect from rat baits made of resin. For those who prefer their wake baits to swim more true and with minimal roll, the Waking Rat is in this mold. I feel a big part of this bait's draw is its more realistic body profile and head position. In profile view, it has a similar shape to a rat with its tall back, pointy head, and back section that tapers down to the tail. Most other baits of this type resemble a rat only at the head - if even there.

The tail on the rat is held in place via a toothpick

But the mouse's tail is held in place with a metal pin or small nail that is secure but is susceptible to rust

Vitality: Both the Waking Rat and Waking Mouse come with stout hardware. I like how the eyes are simply painted impressions in the bait instead of pieces that are glued in place. There's nothing to fall out or lose so it feels as though the bait will hold up extremely well over time. The one oddity I found between the rat and mouse is in the tail attachment. With the rat, 2Faced Baits uses a toothpick to secure the tail, but with the mouse, a metal pin (or nail) is used. This pin has begun to rust on my bait, so I'll likely replace it shortly with a toothpick to avoid future complications. I suspect this might require me to drill the hole just a tad bit larger before inserting toothpick.

Bait Detail : A feature and dimension breakdown of the 2Faced Baits Waking Rat as detailed by our Swimbait SkunkWerx division

Price & Availability: 2Faced Baits are not sold in stores, nor is there a website to order the baits. If interested, the best way to procure one of their many bait profiles, including the Waking Rat and Waking Mouse is simply to send them a direct message either through Facebook or Instagram. The Waking Rat retails for $89 and the Waking Mouse runs $75. Wait time will vary depending on how busy they are.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Nice, compact size - Ordering can be a little tricky if you're not up to snuff on social media
+ Easy to fish
+ Puts off a good wake
+ Stable in the water

Whether you choose the full size rat, or similar in profile, but smaller sized mouse, these topwater creations from 2Faced Baits are fun to fish

Conclusion: 2Faced Baits's interpretation of a rat bait at first glance appears unrefined, yet the bait's shape is actually more realistic than not. Compromises are not made in the bait's proportions or shape to move more water or create more noise. This bait is made to mimic a rat that's fallen into the water from the levee on the California Delta and is swimming along looking for a way to get out. It's a bait not built to garner popularity, but rather to put fish in the boat and that it will do. Whether you choose the full size rat, or similar in profile, but smaller sized mouse, these topwater creations from 2Faced Baits are fun to fish.
