Shimano Refreshes Sustain and Nasci Spinning Reels

Introduction: Shimano refreshed a number of their spinning reels this ICAST and we were particularly excited about the new look and feel of the new Sustain which has now been redesigned with a MGL rotor. The Nasci line also gets an update and continues to deliver a quality design for both fresh and saltwater environments.

The Shimano Sustain gets a redesign and now features an even darker finish

Sustain FJ: The first thing that anglers will notice about the new Sustain is the black finish that reminds us of the Exsence, but with a few silver highlights. The company has re-engineered the new Shimano Sustain FJ to be strong, sensitive, and ready to rise to any freshwater or inshore challenge. One of the strongest in the MagnumLite series of spinning reels, the Sustain features a redesigned MagnumLite (MGL) Rotor for light startup rotation and faster hooksets with increased sensitivity.

The Sustain receives the latest MGL rotor design for lighter start up rotation

The reel features an aluminum HAGANE Body that reduces reel flex when winding against hard-fighting game fish and translates angler effort directly into cranking power. Lighter than its predecessor, Sustain now features Long Stroke Spool to enhance casting distance.

Available in sizes from 2500 to 5000

MicroModule II gearing combined with Shimano’s HAGANE Gear and SilentDrive technologies are all designed to provide anglers with smooth reeling performance. The Sustain will be available this Fall in four sizes from 2500 to C5000 with an MSRP of $299.99 to $309.99 depending on model and size.

The Nasci is bright and shiny and features a new profile

Nasci: With one of the largest size lineups anglers turn to the Nasci spinning reel series to deliver smoothness and durability across a range of saltwater and freshwater applications. The redesigned Nasci family includes six reels in six sizes from 500 to C5000, and now includes Shimano’s SilentDrive technology for increased reeling performance.

The small 500 size caught Wolbugger's eye

SlientDrive is the same gearing found in Shimano’s flagship lineup of reels helps reduce vibration and noise by improving gear tolerances to the micron level for smoother and quieter operation. The cold-forged HAGANE Gear found in Nasci provides unparalleled durability compared to reels with diecast or machined construction, and Shimano’s CoreProtect system provides Nasci with enhanced water resistance without creating a heavy rotational feeling.

Not many of Shimano's reels come in such a small size and the Nasci 500 makes for a great finesse, panfish, or trout reel

The spool’s Propulsion Line Management System provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design while preventing backlashes and wind knots. These reels will also be available in the Fall tineframe with a MSRP from $99.99 to $109.99.
