Okuma Serrano Baitcasters - Designed for the Everyday Angler

Date: 7/8/20
Location: Virtual Event
Admission: Industry Only
Manufacturer: Okuma
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction: Okuma continues to solidify their core freshwater offering with reels that are designed to provide plenty of performance for very reasonable prices. This plenty of bang for the buck approach has made reels like the Komodo, Cerros and Citrix reels all popular among bass anglers. This year Okuma introduces the Serrano in a smaller, more compact body design, priced for the everyday fisherman.

Okuma's newest baitcaster will be an affordable one... meet the new Serrano

Okuma’s new Serrano reels feature a lightweight, corrosion resistant graphite body and side-plates and are designed with a new, more compact form factor that is designed to more comfortably fit in the palm of your hand.

“The new platform that the Serrano is designed on is very exciting,” stated John Bretza, Product Development Manager.  “We have been striving for a more compact baitcast reel for some time, and this reel really hits the sweet spot in size, comfort, and affordability.”

The Serrano features a much more compact design than many previous generation Okuma reels

The Serrano features a 6BB + 1RB precision stainless steel bearing drive system designed For long, smooth casting and the Quick-Set anti-reverse bearing bodes well for solid hook sets.

The frame and sideplates are graphite based and the reel weighs in at 7oz. due to the use of a heavier, but more robust, brass main and pinion gears

The guts of the new Serrano consist of precision cut, high strength brass main and pinion gears that are smooth running and very durable, and when it comes to stopping power Okuma has loaded the reel with a multi-disc drag washer system that provides 11lbs. of stopping pressure.

Cast control is a magnetic system and externally adjustable

Casts are managed via an externally adjustable magnetic cast control system that helps to slow the spool in conditions that call for extra control and finesse. The Serrano's anodized spool is built around a 33.5mm machined aluminum bringing the overall size of the reel down to a compact platform. Another great feature of the Serrano is the double paddle 95mm aluminum swept handle arm with comfortable handle knobs developed from golf grip material for all day cast and retrieve comfort.   With a 6.5:1 and 7.2:1 gear ratio, anglers have a couple of options to choose from.

The new Serrano reel will match up well with the existing line of Serrano rods, but stay tuned as the company is going big on rods this year and has a few new options that are worthy of consideration

With the blue and black finish these reels will match up well with the company's existing Serrano series of rods, but the company also has a number of new rods that will be announced this ICAST that may also be good options.

Most important of all is the price. These Serrano Low Profile Baitcast Reels have an aggressive retail price of only $89.99, positioning them right between Cerros and Epixor Series reels, and they come backed by a 1-year limited warranty.
