Simms Broadens their Technical Garment Portfolio for All Anglers

Date: 7/30/18
Location: Orlando, FL
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Simms
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction: When it comes to apparel for all types of anglers Simms has solidified itself as a leader. Gone are the days when anglers only associated the company as a fly fishing brand. This season the company continued to expand their offerings with new gear that helps anglers stay comfortable and protected in both cold and warm environments, so that they can keep those lines wet longer.

Simms ups the warmth with the new Challenger Insulated Bib

Challenger Insulated Jacket and Bib: The Challenger series of foul weather protection has become the workhorse line for Simms, offering excellent water and wind protection at a much lower price than the company's flagship ProDry line.

This garment comes with Toraydelfy waterproof and breathable exterior materials

This ICAST Simms introduced new insulated versions that add the element of insulated warmth to the equation. These garments make use of Toray materials including Toraydelfy waterproof and breathable membrane. The warmth is provided by layering in PrimaLoft Silver high-loft insulation in the body and legs in the bib and the body and arms in the jacket.

A hidden sunglass cloth in the jacket is a nice touch

As usual Simms packs in the features and things like hand warmer pockets, mesh pockets, reinforced knee pads, and a built in lens cleaner are all additions that make this a truly technical garment. The Challenger Insulated Bib is available in Anvil color in sizes S-4XL and will retail for $299.95. The Challenger Jacket comes in black, and has numerous grey panels to match up well with the bib, in sizes S-4XL and also will cost $299.95.

The Challenger Insulated jacket is as comfortable as it is warm

Stretch Woven Overall: There a lot of times I wear my bibs not only for protection from the elements but also to keep my other garments clean or just for a layer of splash or fish slime protection. Simms wanted to create a more comfortable option and is introducing the Stretch Woven Overall which is made out of 50% nylon, 43% polyester, and 7% spandex for 4 way stretch making this a great option for not just anglers on the water but shore anglers looking for excellent mobility. These durable reinforced suspenders are DWR water resistant and have five pockets to store plenty of gear. This new garment comes in easy to match "Steel" color in sizes S-3XL and will retail for $249 dollars.

When a more comfortable everyday bib fits the application Simms offers the

Katafront Hoody: Simms makes some really good hoodies, many of which are not only technical but look just as good on a run to the grocery store as they do all day on the water.

The Katafront Hoody is a technical fishing hoody with water resistant cuffs and exudes that river to saloon style.

Katafront Hoodies for both him and her

The Katafront Hoody is constructed out of water-shedding fabrics including 92% polyester and 8% spandex for that extra bit of flexibility for unrestricted casts. Over the last two seasons Simms has also made a big push into women's garments and offers versions of the Katafront with specific colors and cuts designed specifically for women.

Cal gives the Katfront a try

The men's Katafront Hoody is available in S-3XL sizes in Anvil and Hex Camo Carbon patterns and retails for only $69.95. The women's hoody is available in XS-2XL and comes in Anvil and an exclusive Teal color. The women's garment is made even more technical with special stretch fleece side panels that provide even more ease of movement, and this stylish and functional garment will retail for $129.95.

The Challenger is a comfortable pullover with a number of technical features including a cell phone pocket hidden in the main kangaroo pocket

Challenger Hoody: Anglers looking for a more traditional pullover hoody will want to check out the new Challenger Hoody which is 100% polyester and has a giant kangaroo pocket complete with an internal cell phone pocket. This garment is great for a wide range of conditions and also offers UPF50 sun protection for those long days on the water. Available in sizes S-3XL and four color options (Hex Camo Storm, Anvil, Admiral Blue, Tan) this garment retails for $69.95

The Warming Hut Gloves are designed to warm your hands up quick

Warming Hut Gloves: They look a bit like boxing gloves but these highly functional gloves are designed to fight cold. When fishing in cold conditions anglers know how hard it is to get their fingers to function. Made with PrimaLoft insulation and wind and water resistant Pertex fabric these gloves will trap heat and warm up your hands quickly. For even more warmth anglers can add a heat pack into the integrated wrist pocket. These specially designed gloves weigh in at 4.8oz. and come in sizes S-XL and retail for $79.95 each.

A hoody for warm weather

SolarFlex Cool Hoody: While I used to wear Simms gear just for foul weather I now find myself wearing their lighter sun protection garments more than anything else. Anglers spend a lot of time under the sun and a lightweight and breathable hoody can make the difference between a great day on the water or one that ends with nasty sun rash.

Talk about technical, even the fabric patterns are designed to shed head and moisture quicker

The SolarFlex Cool Hoody has one purpose, to keep you cool and comfortable while fishing on those hot days. Made with COR3 fabric this garment is quick drying, wicking, and even has anti-odor properties. Delivering UPF50 rating in a thin and lightweight garment. There are also some bonus features built into this hoody including articulated wrist cuffs with thumb loops and sunglasses chamois built right into the inside bottom hem. The SolarFlex Cool Hoody is available in S-3XL sizes, three colors (Granite, Storm, Summer Sky), and retails for $74.99.

Simms goes more stylish this year with garments like the Women's Breeze Tunic, and though it would look great at the tiki bar this tunic is designed to be fished in all day

Breeze Tunic: Designed specifically for women is the Breeze Tunic, a lightweight, breathable tunic designed to help lady anglers stay cool and protected from the sun. This garment may be stylish but don't let that fool you, it is highly technical and built with 74% polyester and 26% Nilit Breeze fabric that makes it extremely light and breathable. This lightweight garment provides UPF50 protection and is available in XS-2XL sizes and three colors (Faded Denim, Dusty Lilac, Pewter) and retails for $89.95

Loaded with pockets and storage on all sides is the Challenger Ultra Tackle Bag

Challenger Ultra Tackle Bag: Simms is also introducing new tackle bags that are designed with a wealth of technical features. Built with 420 nylon the Challenger Ultra Tackle Bag offers plenty of storage with a 60L capacity.

Stow away handled deploy quickly

This bag has multiple exterior zippered pockets to quickly stash items and a water resistant bottom keeps all your gear dry. Quick stash tuck away handles provide a solid grip and slide into the bag to stay out of the way when your on the water.

The Challenger Ultra Tackle Bag is cleverly designed and provides not only a lot of storage but excellent organization so that anglers can spend more time fishing and less time trying to find that tool or perfect lure.

The Challenger Ultra Tackle Bag is available in Anvil color and will retail for $179.95.

Thanks to John Frazier for showing us the wide range of new pieces from Simms. Anglers have plenty to be excited about with all the new options this season

When meeting with John at Simms I asked if the company retires older skus as it continues to introduce so many new ones year on year. John answered that while some styles and pieces do get updated the vast majority of garments stick around. The bottom line is the Simms portfolio continues to get bigger and better every year. With gear that can stand up to the harsh sun, rain, and wind and still look great at the lodge or bar, Simms garments are always up to the challenge.
