Introduction: Accurate pretty much built their entire brand on lever drag reels that are capable to tangling with the toughest fish in the world. These reels are designed to be strong, durable, and yet lighter and more compact than competing reels in the same class. This year the company expanded their lineup with a star drag reel called the Tern.

The Tern is Accurate's first star drag reel

Tern it up: Accurate Fishing has built its reputation on building lever drag reels that are incredibly strong, rigid and durable, yet lighter and more compact than any others in their class. Now, with the introduction of the new “Tern,” Accurate offers that same kind of quality and performance in a star drag reel.

The Tern is a compact series of conventional reels

You know when Accurate builds a reel they are going to make it a tank. The Tern builds on the same technology and design that makes Accurate’s lever drag reels so popular. For starters it is the first star drag reel to feature Accurate’s patent-pending TwinStarDrag which delivers plenty of pressure for fish-fighting smoothness and is designed to be reliable season after season.

The Tern makes use of the company's patent pending TwinStarDrag system

This drag features one washer on each side of the gear with friction plates, instead of a stack of washers on one side, the Tern delivers an ultra-smooth payout of drag with every click of the ergonomically designed star. This precise micro-click star drag system is also designed to make it quick and easy to select the exact amount of pressure needed during battle.

Notice the attractive machine marks on the Tern 300

Accurate will offer the Tern in three different sizes (300, 400 and 500 sized reels), and anglers can choose from models with either a speedy 6:1 retrieve or a more powerful 4.7:1 gear ratio to suit their needs and preferences.

The handle on this reel is a billet aluminum power knob

Every Tern reel features Accurate’s advanced CVX technology, which allows for a lightweight frame that is designed to incredibly strong and rigid and also includes a light and a specially designed spool that is balanced for improved castability.

Every Tern reel is made in the USA

The Tern is constructed out of durable corrosion resistant 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum so that it is not only very rigid but able to stand up to the harsh marine environments. The Tern’s rugged exterior houses six stainless steel ball bearing for smooth, reliable operation, Accurate’s exclusive stainless steel anti-reverse bearing, and 17-4 heat-treated stainless steel gears for a ton of cranking power.

Thanks to Ryan Escutia for showing us the new Tern

This reel features an attractive machined look and the details on this reel are quite refined. Even the power knob is crafted out of billet aluminum. Like other Accurate reels the Tern is made in the company’s own machining facility right here in the USA. The Tern TX-300 will retail for an aggressive price of $279 dollars and each of the larger sizes comes at only a ten dollar premium each. Accurate’s first start drag reel looks like a good one and comes with a frame and drag that offer angler both refinement and power, all in a compact package.
