Introduction:
We'd be very surprised if there was a fly angler anywhere on this earth that hasn't heard of the Orvis brand. As one of the largest fly-fishing companies in existence, they offer an expansive line of products that extends well beyond just fishing. Introduced several years ago, the Helios family of fly rods generated a lot of buzz both online and on the water. This year, Orvis expands the updated Helios 2 lineup and offers us a mix of other fresh new gear.

Freshwater Recon rods make use of a beautiful wood insert.

Recon Fly Rods: This new batch of 4-piece rods replaces the Access series and mixes high-performance with a moderate price tag. All Recons are made in Vermont and utilize a new ferrule design along with high-performance actions. Saltwater models come equipped with aluminum reel seats, while freshwater sticks have burlwood seat inserts.

Simple, clean cosmetics are the name of the game here.

Rod weights will span from 3–12 and each will include a tube and sock. Expect these rods to be priced from $425.00 to $450.00.

The one-piece Helios 12 weight weighs a mere 4.25 ounces!

One-Piece Helios 2 Fly Rods: One-piece saltwater fly rods have been growing in popularity, and Orvis dives into the mix with a new series of one-piece Helios 2 rods. Each model measures 8-feet 10 inches in length and touts the same strength and weight-saving improvements of the regular Helios 2 lineup. Each model is adorned with a slightly different reel seat color and includes a rod sock and tube. These rods will be available in 8–12 weights and will set you back $895.00 each.

Superfine Carbon Fly Rods: Replacing the Superfine Touch series, these new finesse rods are perfect for situations requiring delicate presentations. Available in 2–5 weights, they come with softer actions, chrome stripping/snake guides, and an aluminum/cork reel seat. Each rod includes a tube and sock at a price of about $425.00.

These reels are the epitome of classic simplicity.

New Battenkill Reel Sizes: Two new Battenkill standard-arbor reels will join the existing family. Offered in IV and V sizes to accommodate up to about a 10-weight line, these larger offerings are perfect for spey fishing. Their various features include machined construction, full frames to prevent line pinching, palming rims, and simplistic click-pawl drags. Expect a price of $139.00 for the IV and $149.00 for the V models.

The team at Orvis shows off two new rod offerings.

Conclusion: Orvis wasn't playing any games this year by showcasing four new products. The folks at Orvis tell us to expect all the latest items to become available around the beginning of the new year. Until then, we will be dreaming about casting one of the Helios 2 rods at big snook and Tarpon!
