ICAST 2014 Coverage

Lew's Goes "Lite" with their Newest Baitcaster

Date: 8/20/14
Location: Orlando, FL
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Lew's
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction:
As usual Lew's had a number of exciting new products launching at ICAST. Most exciting of which had to be the new Lew's Lite baitcaster which aims to deliver plenty of performance and features all in a lightweight package.

The newest Lew's reel is the "Lite" which weighs in at only 5.7oz.

Lew's Lite: The new Lew's Lite Speed Spool features a one piece die-cast aluminum frame with strong lightweight C45 carbon sideplates. The spool is aircraft grade Duralumin and to further reduce weight it is 12-hole drilled. Casts are made easier to control with the "SpeedCast" externally adjustable centrifugal braking system.

The Lite features an attractive carbon fiber bowed handle

The reel is loaded with 11 ball bearings and finished with a bowed carbon fiber reel handle that is bowed to bring the grips closer to the body to reduce handle wobble. This feature rich package weighs in at only 5.7oz. and the reel will retail for a very aggressive price of only $239.99.

The Laser Lite is constructed out of graphite

Laser Lite: One of the most exciting new spinning reels at the Lew's booth was the Laser Lite Speed Spin. This slick looking reel may look like it is made out of metal but the frame is actually constructed out of graphite and it also features a graphite skeletal rotor as well. The spool is double anodized with attractive blue highlights and also ported for weight reduction and balance.

The Laser Lite's best feature? The price. Only $29.99!

This reel is designed to dole out plenty of smooth drag pressure with an oiled felt multiple disc drag system. The reel is packed with seven bearings and felt smooth when we cranked on the reel at the show. So how much do you think the Laser Lite retails for? Try $29.99, an extremely low price for a reel with this feature set and performance level.

Head of Lew's, Lynn Reeves, shows us the new Team Lew's Lite Speed Spool

In the span of just a few years Lew's has successfully reintroduced the legendary brand to a whole new generation of anglers, but what keeps them coming back is the great balance of performance and value that the company seems to pack into each and every reel and rod they sell. This year's new baitcasters and spinning reels carry on that tradition and we look forward to seeing how they perform in the field.
