Introduction:
Jim Murphy, founder of Redington and former President of Hardy North America, is obviously no stranger to the fly fishing industry. He has partnered with the Barclay family—conservationists and owners of the Douglaston Salmon Run in New York—to bring us Douglas Outdoors. Based in New York, this fresh company will begin offering fly reels as well as both conventional and fly rods.

The premium DXF series has some very pleasing cosmetics.

DXF Fly Rods: The top-tier DXF fly rods from Douglas feature high modulus 4-piece blanks, AAA cork grips, hard-chrome stripping and snake guides, and anodized aluminum reel seats (certain models also feature an added wood insert). There will be 21 models ranging from 3 to 12 weight covering everything from trout, to saltwater, to two-handed and czech-nymph applications. Every model includes a Cordura triangle tube and rod sock. Look for DXF fly rods by August 1st priced between $320.00 to $375.00.

Clean cork coupled with an elegant wood insert makes for increased appeal.

DHF Fly Rods: This series of rods will offer an affordable price point with a nice level of performance that should appeal to many anglers. Touting IM-7 blank construction, DHF rods are reinforced with DuraResin for additional strength and durability.

The DHF series promises satisfying performance at a more affordable price.

Each model also sports a cork grip with fiber-cork edges, carbon fiber reel seat insert with anodized aluminum up-lock, and a Cordura tube with integrated pockets. Twelve models will be available from 4–10 weight, with models for fresh and saltwater as well as one and two-handed applications. Availability begins by August 1st with pricing from $159.00 to $269.00.

Argus Fly Reels: Sporting traditional, understated looks, the made-in-New York Argus fly reels are machined from anodized bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum and given a flat gray finish. All models feature a standard arbor for maximum backing capacity as well as a reversible click check with rim adjustment, marine brass reel foot, laser-textured palming rim, and a twill fleece-lined pouch. You can grab an Argus starting in October at a price ranging from $375–$450.

The drag system of the Argus series is the epitome of simplicity.

Nexus Fly Reels: Nexus fly reels are engineered out of machined and anodized 6061 aluminum to be super strong and lightweight. The reel frames, spools, and feet are heavily ported for maximum weight reduction.

The Nexus series is lightweight thanks to generous porting throughout.

The porting continues into the spool....

The drag is comprised of a sealed Rulon system to stay operational in wet conditions. Five sizes will be initially offered and each model will include a neoprene rod bag for a price ranging from $199–$289. Expect availability by September 1st.

Conclusion: While Douglas Outdoors may be new, the people behind the company bring a lot of prior experience with them. Spirits were running high at the show, and the team was very enthusiastic about the products being offered. Be sure to check out our overview of the casting and spinning rods from Douglas that were being shown on the ICAST side of this year's show!
