Tuning and Re-Tuning for Performance : Quantum

Date: 7/10/13
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Admission: Buyers & Press Only
Manufacturer: Quantum
Reviewer: Cal

Introduction:
Quantum takes the task of tweaking and refining their products very seriously. It is this mindset that saw the birth of their Performance Tune (PT) division over ten years ago and it is this division that brought about the industry's first externally adjustable centrifugal braking system, the first titanium bail wire with magnetic trip for spinning reels, and their famous Hot Sauce lubricant. Two years ago, Quantum PT brought us the game changing Exo casting reel, so what do they have in store for us this year? Let's find out.

Quantum enters the Mg game with their new Tour Mg PT.

Tour Mg PT: It seems every manufacturer who wants to be considered a major player in the low profile bass reel market has to have a magnesium based reel. To realize after all these years Quantum had yet to make this leap didn't quite compute. Well, no longer as this year, Quantum unveiled their 5.4 ounce Tour Mg PT. This svelte little reel is sort of a hybrid of existing reels with some exo-skeletal type features, but predominantly solid overall body based on the Energy PT.

It will be available immediately in left hand retrieve and with a flipping switch!

The Tour Mg PT features a refined, machined aluminum handle, a skeletal spool, an internally adjustable centrifugal braking system, hard alloy drive gear, a ceramic drag, and Quantum's very own hybrid PT bearings. This feature packed reel will be available on two retrieve ratios, both in right and left hand retrieve, and all for the price of $279.

Quantum spared little expense at lightening this reel up.

Check out their new, Skeletal spool.

KVD's signature series receives an update.

Tour KVD PT: KVD's signature series of low profile bass reels gets a totally new design this year. The Tour KVD PT now features an all aluminum frame and sideplate, eleven (11) PT bearings, a new carbon fiber, stainless steel, and ceramic drag system (CSC), an aluminum main gear and drive shaft, and a new high capacity skeletal spool.

With a totally redesigned reel.

This reel is $70 less than its predecessor but still stylish right down to the laser etched knobs.

The Tour KVD PT will be available in three retrieve ratios in right hand retrieve (7.3:1, 6.6:1, 5.3:1), and two in left hand retrieve (7.3:1, 5.3:1), and will retail for $229 - $70 lower than previous models!

All these years and KVD didn't have a spinning reel with his name on it.

Tour KVD PT (spinning): Perhaps even more exciting than KVD's re-designed signature series casting reels are the all new Tour KVD PT Spinning reels built with an aluminum frame and sideplates, but with a brand new C4LF carbon fiber rotor. Quantum's new carbon alloy features fibers that are four to eight times longer than those in other composites resulting in a design that they claim is 2.6 times stronger than normal composites.

Well no longer. Quantum took care of that this year.

The Tour KVD PT Spinning reel comes with the afore mentioned and Quantum born Titanium Bail wire, a tru-balance, tempered aluminum handle, hybrid PT bearings, MaxCast II spool design and the same CSC drag system found in the KVD signature casting reel. It will be available in four sizes with prices as outline in the matrix below.

The KVD Tour Spinning will be available in four sizes for only $179.

Introducing the new Quantum Iron inshore reel.

IRON PT: Quantum makes a foray into the low profile saltwater inshore market this year with the new Iron PT baitcaster. This reel is built with an aluminum frame and handle side plate, heavy duty brass gearing, pinion, and a stainless steel drive shaft, Quantum's CSC drag system, ACS Cast control, and 7 PT bearings.

Check out the power handle!

The new Iron PT has a rated line capacity of 240 yards of 14 pound nylon monofilament and will come in two retrieve ratios (6.4:1 & 7.1:1). In addition, the 6.4:1 right hand model is available with a specialized handle featuring a large, oversized power knob. The Iron PT will retail for $199.

Quantum's remaining reels all receive left hand options this coming year!

Chris Strickland was on hand to show us the new Quantum products.

Conclusion: It was obvious with the introduction of their Exo PT casting reels that Quantum has taken the task of Performance Tuning their product to an entirely different level. Now with the introduction of their first magnesium baitcaster, a brand new spinning reel with a lightweight, strong, carbon fiber rotor, and a brand new inshore baitcasting reel, their busy filling out their suite of performance tuned products and aligning themselves more closely against their competitors. We're anxious to see how these new products handle out on the water!
