Debriefing Phenix's Recon : On the Water with Vince Borges (continued)

The Lineup: There are eleven casting and five spinning models in the Recon Series. The casting models range from six foot eight inches (6’-8”) in length on up to eight feet with actions designed around the classic definition of bass sticks. In other words, they are intended to support both vertical and horizontal presentation techniques and are less technique specific and more “Search for One” type rods.

Daiwa Japan's Alphas Finesse Custom makes a nice fit with Phenix's new series of rods.

The models with split rear grips feature a hook hangar on the back of the rod.

Zander gravitated towards the spinning rods continuing our “What the Finesse” theme and the PHX-S763 gave him the opportunity to take his new Shimano Stradic for a continued test run. We also had on hand the new Chronarch, Daiwa’s Z200, Daiwa Japan’s PX68, PX68 SPR, Alphas Finesse Custom, Quantum’s EXO PT, well, you get the idea. Needless to say, Vince was very excited to have us on the boat with him and we spent a good amount of time going over the lineup and matching rods to reels.

Zander continuing his "What the Finesse" duties ...

... While Cal continues fishing 22nd Century's Stubby enroute to a full blown review.

The Bite: While Vince was concentrating on finding the fish and identifying a pattern, Zander and I were in full blown tackle testing mode. We didn’t really mind or pay attention to where the bass may be hiding and what might trigger them to bite. Instead, we spread out our tackle on the deck of Vince’s boat and continued to tie on an array of topwater baits, cranks, lipless cranks, swimbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, and soft plastics all in an effort to get an overall feel for the Recon Series of rods. Vince was both puzzled and a little overwhelmed at how we went about our business with little regard to throwing what was likely to trigger a bite.

This photograph is obscured to protect the innocent from embarrassment, but really, only one person on the boat uses right hand reels and it wasn't Vince or Cal.

Cal tries out a bait from one of Vince's other sponsors, TnT baits (remember the Wadda Jig?) and is pleased with the result!

Initial Impressions: We don’t take the task of reviewing product lightly and can hardly offer up a detailed review on any product after just one short day on the water. But what we can offer today, is our initial impression on the Phenix Recon Series of rods. In a nutshell? They are weighted right, fairly well balanced, the components are a grade above what we’d expect to find at their price point, the blanks are responsive, cast well, and their sensitivity is as expected, better than budget, not as good as high end. Assembly of the rods we had on hand were first rate and detailing was very clean and very JDM-esque. These sticks are exactly what the TackleTour crowd appreciate. If Phenix can keep up with demand and customer service, watch out.

WTF?!?! Zander lands another.

If Phenix can keep up with the demand and offer excellent customer service... watch out, the Recons are a force to be "reckoned" with.

Conclusion: With little to no help from us, though the bite was still tough, Vince was finally able to put us on some fish, but it didn't really matter. We came for the rods and stayed for the opportunity to put them through the paces. The catching, honestly, was secondary. What excites us is the fact it looks like Phenix Rods has finally found their niche with a product that's priced right, offers higher end components, and is detailed with cosmetics to rival that of the exotic imports. These are exciting times for a company whose goals have always been to offer something just a little more refined and from what we saw and felt with the Recon rods, that search has now been met.
