Introduction:
Despite a slow year by his standards last season, Kevin VanDam continues to dominate the BASS Elite Series circuit in the minds of consumers and fans alike. His marks of consistency and excellence are credits few can rival. We take a look at one of his latest rod designs with Quantum. Here's our look at the Tour KVD PT TKVDC6106FB (6'10" Medium Heavy, Fast Action).

Quality/Construction: The Quantum TourKVD PT TKVD6106FB (6106FB for short) is a six foot ten inch (6'10") medium heavy casting rod made from Quantum's HSX64 Graphite. The blank features a satin finish and the rear grip is EVA foam with a split design that's assembled very cleanly. Epoxy work over the thread wraps was very good save for one guide and the blank and guides are very straight. This is a nicely assembled rod.

This stick has a nice, fast taper.

Performance: I paired my Quantum TourKVD 6106FB with my previously reviewed Quantum MG baitcasting reel spooled with 50lb Sunline FX2 braided line in TackleTour blue.

Tuned by KVD.

Casting: The TourKVD 6106FB is rated as a medium heavy powered stick and feels every bit that rating during casting tests. It has a very familiar feel as it loads during a cast and releases that energy predictably. Be aware though, that the guides are minima style meaning they're smaller than standard guides, but larger than true micros. Either way, leader knots will still slow your cast down a little through these guides.

Minima guides.

Sensitivity: The proof in the graphite mix of any rod is how well that blank performs in sensitivity. We're not privy to the technical numbers behind Quantum's HSX64 graphite but for a sub $200 rod, the 6106FB is surprisingly crisp and sensitive.

This stick is crisp and sensitive.

Power: Taking a look at the 6106FB's RoD chart below, you can see it lines up very well with our Search For One baseline rod as well as our secondary baseline, G.Loomis's MBR843C GLX. Out on the water, the 6106FB again performed as expected given its rating and performance back at the lab. It has a very traditional "medium heavy" feel to it in terms of power.

against our Search For One Baseline sticks.

Fishing moving baits and soft plastics with this stick out on Clear Lake and Lake Berryessa here in Northern California, I had little trouble getting a good hook set and directing the fish to the boat. I'm never one to horse fish in. Rather I let the rod do the work and the 6106FB never let me down.
