Battle of the Turd Baits - Dropping the Missile Bomba Worm

Total Score: 7.58 - GOOD

Introduction:
Just when you've grown comfortable into thinking lure designers and manufacturers have exhausted available profiles for soft plastic baits, something rumbles in the creative bowels of those designers and out shoots another. Sometimes it feels like a crap shoot as if they're just throwing things up on the bait wall to see what sticks. But then, that bait craving hits you, and the like guilty pleasure of grabbing something quick at the Bell, you find yourself trying some of this new ... stuff. This was kinda sorta the case with me and the subject of today's review, Missile Bait's new offering in the quickly expanding turd bait category - their Bomba 3.5.

Impressions: I'll admit, I have largely avoided the poop bait trend being highly skeptical of the profile's effectiveness and dismissive of its need to exist. As a result, I'm not entirely familiar with the profile's origins or the exact shape, consistency, etc. of the originals. What I do know is that a lot of bait companies are jumping on the trend.

The Bomba 3.5 is the latest soft plastic bait from Missile Baits

What I find interesting about the Bomba's profile is, it actually has some shape to it. Meaning it's more than just a clump of soft plastic. In fact, the contours remind me of a closed up crawdad with a defined torso and tail section. This was the tiny bit of motivation I needed to actually tip my hook with one of these baits.

It is a 3.5" do-nothing bait that has some resemblance to a crawfish

Real World Tests: Being a soft plastic bait, there's no real definitive rod and reel combo to rely upon when fishing the Missile Baits Bomba 3.5. I ended up tossing it on both spinning and casting gear and mostly with a fluorocarbon leader with a size two or three straight shank worm hook tied to the end of the line.

My literal reaction to the first fish caught on this bait profile - huh?

The bait itself features a hook channel on the underside to facilitate weedless rigging much like a paddletail swimbait. The side where the hook penetrates is very stickbait-like and what I'd consider the tail. The other end is has a more teardrop shape with little bumps and other detailing resembling a crawdad's head. So essentially this bait is rigged backwards.

One side of the bait has divisions resembling the tail of a crawfish

Like any soft plastic bait, the ways in which you can rig and fish it are up to your imagination. I went pretty vanilla fishing it both with a small bullet weight and without. About the most exotic way I rigged the Bomba was on a free rig. Either way, the Bomba is exceedingly easy to cast and pitch. The bait weighs 12 grams (0.42oz) by itself, so any manner of reliable casting or spinning reel should be able to present it with or without a weight.
