Introduction:
Never one to rest on his laurels, Trey Kistler is constantly looking for ways to improve and diversify his product. In fact, 2024 marks the 25th Anniversary of his company, Kistler Custom Rods. He even made a limited supply run of a 25th Anniversary Helium rod with the original handle design, reel seat, and blue Zirconium guides! At the time of its introduction, the Helium series was Kistler's top end offering and has since been supplanted by Z-Bone. Well, in their silver anniversary year, there's now a new top dog in the company's lineup. Today, we take a look at one of the sticks in that lineup, the Nitranium Nit703LMH.

Kistler Custom Rods has a new series! Introducing Nitranium

Impressions: The Nitranium Nit703LMH is a seven foot (7'-0") stick built around a blank that is manufactured in the US. That's right, the Nitranium represents a return for Kistler Custom Rods to a US made blank only this blank is not from North Fork Composites. Returning to form, Kistler is being somewhat secretive of the source of their blank for this series, which of course, is what sparked my interest in the product to begin with.

The first guide (stripper) and the tip top are Fuji SS/SiC

The remainder are REC nickel titanium

The rod is adorned with a hybrid guide train featuring a Fuji SS/SiC stripper and tip top with REC nickel titanium guides in between. The "light medium heavy" designation is Kistler's way of delivering a stick with the tip of a medium powered rod matched with one that possesses the backbone of medium heavy stick. With that unique power designation comes a slower than usual taper of moderate fast. Finishing the rod is a full rear grip made of cork, no foregrip and a tried and true Fuji ECS reel seat.

Matched with an Abu Garcia Zenon MG-LTX and ready for action

Real World Tests: The Nit703LMH felt nice and light in my hand , and with that unique power designation, I decided to lean into all of that by matching the rod with an Abu Garcia Zenon MG-LTX. This reel is somewhat of a hybrid itself able to support both conventional and finesse style applications. I spooled the reel with some Varivas Dead or Alive finesse braid and topped it with a leader of Seaguar Tatsu Fluorocarbon in eight pound test using an Albright knot for the connection.

The reel seat is a Fuji ECS

Casting: The Nit703LMH came to me very early in the season, so to get a feel for it, I simply tied on a quarter ounce Berkley finesse jig with a Chigger Craw trailer. I mostly wanted to get a feel for the stick and few baits offer that opportunity better than a jig and trailer setup. I'd estimate the weight of this bait combo to be right around half an ounce if not a little over. The Nit703LMH handled it just fine really.

Rear grip is made of cork

For the other end of the spectrum, I tied on a simple ned rig with a 3/32 ounce Brian Schmidt Ned Dred head paired with a Z-Man Finesse TRD (right around a quarter of an ounce total). This bait combo was also no issue for the Nit703LMH though I could have stood for a lighter leader.

A good portion of the blank has this Minecraft-like wrap

But it transitions to a more bare blank look about two thirds up the rod
