Introduction:
As we've been uncovering all year, Abu Garcia's gen four revamp of their freshwater reel lineup extends from the newly introduced Revo X through their flagship Premier. However, casting reels weren't the only product to receive a refresh. Abu's extensive lineup of spinning reels received a corresponding renewal. Today, we take a look at one of the workhorses in their spinning lineup. Here's our take on the Gen 4 Revo S S30 spinning reel.

Introducing Abu Garcia's gen 4 Revo S Spinning Reel.

Impressions: Abu Garcia's Revo S is available in four different sizes from 10 through 40. We fished the 30. Spinning reel sizes are always difficult to correlate, but just going by rated line capacity, a 30 sized Revo spinning reel is roughly equivalent to a Daiwa 2500 or Shimano 3000 size spinning reel. When you get down to spool diameter and body size, well, it's much more difficult to compare.

The Revo S Spinning reel is available in four sizes. We fished the S30.

The Revo S30 is the typical, physical size spinning reel I routinely fish. I adore spinning reels that are made super small, like the 1000 or even 750 sized Shimano reels, but line management is much more of an issue because of the smaller diameter spools on those reels. Hence my preference for the larger reels like a Revo S30.

Rigged and ready to go.

Real World Tests: I spooled the S30 up with some eight pound Sunline Super Natural nylon monofilament and paired it with Phenix's new FTX-S 71L Feather series spinning rod.

The Revo S30 comes with a 6.2:1 gear ratio.

Retrieve: The Revo S30 comes with a 6.2:1 gear ratio which, on a full spool of line equates to roughly thirty four and a half inches (34.5") of line pick up per turn of the handle. This is a similar rate of line pickup to something in the high sevens or low eights in an average sized low profile baitcasting reel.

This handle knob is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is super comfortable to grasp.

The Revo S30's actual feel as you turn the handle is solid and relatively smooth. There are no issues there and the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material Abu Garcia uses for the reel's knob is super comfortable to grasp. In fact, I think I prefer the shape and texture of these knobs over the EVA foam versions Abu uses on the majority of their other reels.

The Revo S30's drag consists of three metal washers (one keyed), one felt washer, and one carbon washer.
