In The Mood... For Jigs (continued)

Gann's Performance Tackle: Gann's Performance Tackle is another Northern California Bait company producing quality products. In December of 2008 we published a preview of this company's product line that featured a rather unique and well regarded football head jig. Today we take a closer look at their Flippin/Pitchin' Jig.

Gann's 6.0 Flippin'/Pitchin' Jig Specifications

The Skirt: The Gann's Flippin'/Pitchin' jig features a hand tied silicone skirt that is made up of anywhere from fifty to sixty individual strands. It is available in eighteen different colors. The interesting about these skirts is where most hand tied skirts feature one band of thread around the skirt material, Gann's uses an old technique of first putting down a layer of thread beneath the skirt to prevent the silicone material from slipping on the jig's collar. The skirt is then secured with a final wrap over the silicone strands.

Introducing Gann's Performance Bait's 6.0 Flippin'/Pitchin' Jig.

The Hook: This jig gets its name from the massive 6/0 heavy wire, flat eye, Gamakatsu hook that is its heart and soul. This larger than normal hook helps to ensure more positive hooksets in dense cover. The jig itself is available in sizes ranging from one quarter (1/4) ounce on up to one (1) ounce and features a powder coated head.

The 6.0 Flippin'/Pitchin' Jig features an integrated bait keeper.

Head & Line Tie: The line ties on all our Gann's jigs were free and clear from any paint. They are positioned in such a way as to lift the jig up and over any obstructions you might encounter, but it is unconcealed so care must be taken to inspect your knot or just retie every so often. The head on this Flippin'/Pitchin' head is a bit more angular than the typical grass jig head and moved through weeds very well.

Gann's Performance Bait's products exude quality right out of the package not to mention an optional rattle as well.

Durability: The powder coated heads on our Flippin'/Pitchin' jigs held up just fine to use in and around wood and rocks and during our sidewalk torture test. We encountered no premature wear issues with the quality hand tied skirt.

Care is taken in the tying of these jigs as you can see with both the base layer of thread and the securing wrap on top.

Availability: Gann's Performance Tackle products are available at Walton's Pond in San Leandro, California (1.510.352.3932). For more information or to order direct you can also visit their website at gannstackle dot com.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus

J Quality quality quality L Quality comes at a price
J Big, sharp, heavy duty hook by Gamakatsu L Can be difficult to find
J Intricate and durable paint on jighead
J Available online if you cannot find it in a local shop

Effectiveness: The 6.0 Flippin'/Pitchin' Jig from Gann's Performance Tackle does just what it's supposed to do, flip and pitch into cover and come out easily ready for the next spot, and it does all this straight out of the package. But enough cannot be said about the quality of this jig. It might be a little hard to find, but through the two sources listed above, you should be able to get what you need out of Gann's Performance Tackle. I know the more we fish this company's product, the more we like what they have to offer.
