Lure Review

The L-O-U-S SKT Magnum from Lucky Craft (continued)

Features: There are actually three models of the SKT Magnum crank. The 120Mag DR, 110Mag MR, and new for this year, 105Mag MR. This new version of the bait is intended to run down to 4 feet, so it's a super shallow running version. Finishes for these baits, while not as extensive as the usual Lucky Craft rainbow of patterns, are still rather extensive and all models, as far as we know, are available in silent running mode only.

There are two MR and one DR baits in the SKT Mag suite of lures.

Design/Ergonomics: I've only run a couple of the 120Mag DRs and one 110Mag MR, but all the baits I've put in the water have run true out of the box. Consistency bait to bait seems very good. Those not accustomed to casting LOUSs will have difficulty with the three plus ounce 120Mag DR, but matched with the right stick, it's honestly not that bad. There's good detailing on these baits but realism is only average. Hook spacing, on the other hand is excellent and there's no way for the stock hooks to get entangled with one another.

Lures of Unusual Size (LOUS) are becoming more and more common.

Application: Taking the entire suite of Lucky Craft SKT Magnum cranks as a whole, we can see these baits cover a wide range of depths from 4 to 15 to 25 feet depending of course, on the diameter of your fishing line and how far you cast these baits out. Be sure to match them up with a big, heavy duty cranking stick though as they do have some weight to them and casting will take some work getting accustomed to the baits' heft.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Easier than it looks to throw - Difficult to store in a utility box because of their size!
+ The DR really gets down deep
+ Runs true out of the box

It can be hard to imagine a fish hitting a crankbait this large, but they do!

Conclusion: Even for someone accustomed to throwing big baits, the SKT Magnum cranks by Lucky Craft can take some getting used to simply because it's a crankbait! And crankbaits are not usually part of the LOUS equation. But that rule has been broke as more and more cranks are popping up in this LOUS mold. The SKT Magnum will always be the first for me, and I really enjoy how this bait performs. It's literally too big for most everyone to think about throwing it which is all the more reason why you should be and it's another crank that's won this Editor's Choice.
