Ready for the Storm, Gill’s IN21J Coast Sport Jacket (continued)

Operation cont'd: The Coast Jacket features a water repellant finish and you can basically shake water off the jacket with simple motions, making it possible to dry the jacket very quickly. This jacket also provides additional safety for anglers and features Reflexite® reflectives on every side providing 360 degrees of reflective visibility. One final thing that I really liked about this jacket is that it has a zippered internal security pocket which was a great place to stash your wallet or phone on those wet days.

On colder days layering is necessary with this jacket

Durability: Like other Gill pieces that we have tested thus far the Coast Jacket is built with the attention to detail that you would expect from a premium garment. We observed the stitching to be very clean and well reinforced, and all of the laminate panels lined up precisely. This jacket is well built and designed to last many seasons with fully taped seams so that it will remain waterproof over the long haul.

The zippers have Gill zipper pulls for easy access

Price & Applications: The Gill Coast Jacket retails for $199 which is 10 dollars cheaper than the Frabill FXE Stormsuit jacket, 50 dollars cheaper than the Shimano Dryfender 3T, is priced identically to the Gore-Tex based Simms Headwaters jacket and significantly cheaper than the ultra-premium $499 dollar Simms ProDry jacket. While all of these jackets are by no means “cheap” they are all designed to cater to serious anglers looking for a highly technical garment that is lightweight and easy to fish in yet capable of delivering absolute waterproof protection from boat spray or a major downpour.

Anglers can add their name in the provided space on the inner collar to identify their investment

One of the best things about all Gill jackets is that they have a unique style that is both attractive and functional. The streamlined cut and light feel is part of what makes the Coast jacket so versatile. You can pack this jacket down easily and it will offer good wind and rain protection in the backcountry, but can just as easily be worn over normal clothes when making a run to the supermarket in rainy weather. The Coast Jacket is a definite step up from the Inshore Lite Jacket wind and rain protection and offers just a little more warmth. For every cold days anglers will still need to layer up and this jacket accommodates technical fleeces underneath very well.

Gill IN21J Coast Sport Jacket Ratings (?/10)

Construction/Quality The Gill Coast Sport Jacket is well built and made from the company's proprietary 3-Dot laminated fabric which is both functional and comfortable 8
Performance Complete waterproof protection and very good wind resistance. Thicker and more durable than the Inshore Lite jacket but still doesn't offer a whole lot of warmth in extreme cold conditions. The jacket does offer room for layering and a fleece works nicely on colder days. The hood on this jacket is peaked with volume adjustment and shields out heavy downpours very well 9
Price Compared to competing offerings the Gill Coast jacket is priced reasonably 8
Features Lightweight design, waterproof, packable, breathable, front zipper storm guard, and zippered internal security pocket. There is a laundry list of features in this jacket but the best feature of all is the Gill 3-Dot fabric which is breathable, comfortable and durable 8.5
Design (Ergonomics) Very comfortable and offers free range of motion to make casts and operate boats. Gill is an expert at making waterproof garments that you can move quickly and comfortably in and this jacket is a great example 8.5
Application Very good for inshore and everyday applications, not as good for extreme weather, for that you will need to step up to a thicker insulated jacket or extra layers 7.5

Pluses and Minuses:

+ A versatile jacket for mild to mid range conditions, great for bass anglers - Though offering more protection than the Inshore jacket the Coast Jacket is still best suited for warmer conditions
+ Provides good protection from wind and rain
+ Cut leaves plenty of room for layering
+ Packs down reasonably small
+ Reflectives all around for safety
+ Priced reasonably versus the competition

Conclusion: While competition in the technical fishing garment market is heating up Gill continues to bring quality offerings to the deck, and leveraging years of experience designing garments for the sailing industry gives this company a great foundation in which to address angling applications.

The Gill Coast Sport Jacket is a great choice for bass anglers looking for lightweight foul weather protection

The company knows how to create garments with excellent waterproof and drainage characteristics but because their primary market was sailing and ocean racing they have an intimate understanding of how to create technical garments that are light, comfortable and provide full range of motion. All of these characteristics are present in the Coast Jacket which proved to be both easy to fish in and an excellent shield from the elements. The storm is brewing, the competition is getting fiercer but this is yet another Gill garment that is worthy of consideration from hardcore anglers seeking versatile foul weather protection.
