Reel Review

Abu Garcia's Revo4 Beast is a Beauty (continued)

Retrieve: I'm happy to report that the Beast handles normal sized baits just fine during the cast. Click the reel over and has the same smooth, but connected feel as its gen4 siblings. The 95 millimeter handle is a nice touch, but I find the oversized round knobs too big for my liking. I'd love to see this reel packaged with optional, normal sized knobs so each end user can make the decision for themselves which set to use.

The oversized knobs are supported by two plastic bushings

Power: Most all of the Revo4 low profile casting reels have a revamped drive train with a brass main gear and pinion instead of the aluminum alloy found in the generation 3 lineup. The Beast's guts have always been made of brass and that continues for gen4. Couple that with the typical oversized gear, longer than normal handle, an available 5.8:1 gear ratio, and aluminum frame and you have one solid, powerful reel.

The main gear is made of brass

Drag: Abu Garcia outfits the Revo4 Beast with their top end Power Stack Carbon Matrix drag system, and rates the drag on this reel with a maximum of thirty pounds (30lbs) of pressure. If you're familiar with my fishing style and take on drags in general, what I'm always more concerned with rather than maximum pressure is how smooth and consistent is that drag?

Abu Garcia does a nice job of designing in a mix of drag washers that not only provides more than enough power, but smooth and consistent performance at "normal" settings to tire your catch. The Power Stack Drag system is smooth, reliable, and has held up very well over extended use.

The Beast's rather substantial drag stack

Design & Ergonomics: The Revo4 Beast tipped our scales at nine and a half ounces (9.5oz). It is a hefty little reel that really doesn't feel very bulky save for those oversized, round knobs. Those knobs and I don't get along. In fact, the overall feel of this reel would improve for me a great deal if it just had more comfortable knobs to hold onto while using the reel.

The Beast is definitely one of the more premium Revo variants coming in with a retail price of $279.99

Price & Applications: The Beast is definitely one of the more premium Revo variants coming in with a retail price of $279.99. The good news is this reel is capable of so much more than simply big baits. Throw on the single handle, and you can take it jigging out along the coast. As a freshwater reel, it's a nice choice for species that are bigger and meaner than largemouth. The Beast is a good, general purpose option where heavier line is called for.

Pluses and Minuses:

Plus

Minus
+ Capable of more than big, heavy baits - Knobs are too big
+ Good line capacity for heavier lines - Heavy
+ Relatively compact for all its ratings
+ Brass guts

The Revo4 Beast is a reel very worthy of its name and pedigree

Conclusion: With its matte grey finish, Abu Garcia's Revo4 Beast is a lot more low key than the generation 3 model. Gone are the painted on claw marks and reflective finish but in is a brand new drag stack that provides even better performance. That's what this generation is all about - performance. I just wish it came with knob options so I could swap out those oversized bulbs. Then again, I think I had the same issue with the previous model. Regardless, given its line capacity, ability to handle even normal sized baits, and solid internals, the Revo4 Beast is a reel very worthy of its name and pedigree.

If you're looking for a low profile reel that can chuck big baits with the best of them, and then serve as your back up, or main reel, for other techniques, this Beast is a beauty.
